Ro$$ Mac Defines the Art Of The Hustle

    0

On a typical night, you can click on Ro$$ Mac’s Instagram story and find him grinding – whether chopping it up at the DJ Booth in a popular Chicago bar, or opening for an artist at a packed out concert, he’s making sure his latest single is in rotation.

This is the strategic hustle that sets him apart from his peers. The rapper has taken everything he’s learned from growing up on the South Side of Chicago to working on Wall Street, to inform his music and how he promotes it.

HypeFresh caught up with the “Wall Street Rapper” a few days before he heads out on his first tour opening for T.I. and DJ Envy.
    Ro$$ Mac-1
Q: You’ve coined the term the “first Wall-Street Rapper.” What does that mean? How does it set you apart?

A: I think an artist needs to be genuine with what they’re talking about. Most people won’t resonate with an artist that’s not true to who they are. For me, I love sharing my story – I think in our community we brag about the wrong shit. I’m going to brag about the shit that’s dope to me – being a black guy in finance. Being a broker dealer versus a drug dealer.

Q: When did you realize it was time to start pursuing a career in music?

A: It took seeing how my music impacted other people to really push me to take it seriously. My brother [song writer and producer Sayyi] and I worked on a track called “What We Doin’.” I had a big ass party I was getting ready to throw in New York for New Year’s Eve so I told him to fly in so we could perform the song. There were like 500 people there and the whole place went up!
    Ro$$ Mac-2
Q: Tell me more about your party series The Drill – how does it fit with your brand as an artist?

A: The Drill used to be a party series that we threw in New York, and then we expanded from there to events in Chicago, New York, Miami, L.A., Atlanta, etc. The events are geared toward sophisticated, young, black professionals. We realized brands like D’Ussé, BET, and Revolt want to be connected to our audience so we connect brands to people, and people to music.

If you’ve heard of The Drill, then you’ve probably heard my name. I think that’s something that’s unique to me as I push my music – I’m able to throw dope parties, while also using my platform to expose these audiences to my music. I get to host, perform, and get people used to my voice and my brand.

Q: What was a turning point for your music, and how has your music evolved since then?

A: My music really took a big step after I was able to travel with my brother and Jeremih on the Forest Hills Drive Tour – it was one of the greatest experience of my life. I got to see how some of the top professionals – Jeremih, YG, Big Sean, J. Cole – move and operate from city to city. Being on the tour helped me figure out the type of music I want to make as an artist and allowed me to become comfortable with the messages I’m trying to convey in my music, whether the hottest music for your party, or music that is more conscious.
Ro$$ Mac-3Q: Your latest single is called “Faygo,” what is Faygo?

A: Faygo is soda (we call it pop in Chicago), that’s popular in the Midwest. If you go to any corner store in the hood, they sell all of the different colors and flavors.

I put the record together with Asa2Times. There are only two hip-hop stations in Chicago, and we have DJs on both stations putting the song in rotation – it’s a vibe for sure.

Q: What can we expect next (album, touring, etc.)?

A: I just got added to this HBCU college tour for Coors Light with T.I. and DJ Envy, hitting different cities in the South. It kicks off September 9th in Memphis, check me out! I also just released the video for my other single “Solo,” and the video for “Faygo” is coming out soon!

How Is The Rise Of Gaming Being Used By The Film Industry?

    0

    Gaming Being
The games industry is growing at a rapid pace, and it generated a revenue of $91 million in 2016. It has an incredibly strong influence on popular culture, and there seems to now be a growing tradition of games being turned into movies when in the past it was normally the other way around. Games are also frequently being used as a way to sell films and attract wider audiences.

One of the most notable recent examples is The Angry Birds Movie. Angry Birds began as a mobile app game for smartphones in 2009. It quickly became one of the most popular apps of all time, and by 2011 hit 500 million downloads. Because the games franchise was so popular, Hollywood executives realized that there was even more money to be made. Columbia Pictures bought the rights for it and released the picture in collaboration with Rovio Entertainment. The film which featured Danny McBride, Sean Penn, and Peter Dinklage as voice actors went on to rake in an impressive $349 million worldwide, highlighting the market potential for game-based movies on the big screen.

There are also films based on the most popular game genres in society. The lottery, for instance, is played by nearly half of all American adults, with multiple draws occurring at various times of the week. Because the game that pays out life-changing sums of money is so well known, its themes have often been included in popular films. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Paycheck, Lucky Numbers, and It Could Happen to You all feature fictional lottery winners, and remind viewers that even though the chances may be slim, it is still possible to win the lottery. Poker is another popular game that has made it into numerous movies. Rounders, which featured Matt Damon in the starring role and Casino Royale with Daniel Craig are two prime examples.

Another film based on a game due to hit the silver screen soon is the new Tomb Raider movie, directed by Roar Uthaug and starring Alicia Vikander who is best known for her excellent turn in Ex-Machina. The reboot will be released in 2018, and will open to a readymade audience thanks to the success of recent games leading up to it. Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition and Rise of the Tomb Raider were both hugely popular and earned widespread critical praise. There was also the Lara Croft Go mobile app that Square Enix released to get its product to the massive mobile gaming crowds.

It’s almost as if films and gaming go hand in hand now. Massive franchises like the Marvel Extended Universe seek to get games made of their films to attract more viewers, while popular games are translated into film because the producers know the audience is already there. Despite some adaptations such as the original Tomb Raider films with Angelina Jolie and the recent Assassin’s Creed film earning scathing reviews, the large box-office figures suggest that gaming and film will continue to collaborate for many years to come.

Are Fidget Spinners Ruining The Brains of Millennials?

    0

Spinners are more than likely a “form of hypnosis” being used to “zombify” the masses, according to a Russian news report.

Well, apparently the only thing Russia is good is getting Donald Trump elected.
For the record, fidget spinners are cheap plastic baubles for kids amazed at the wonders of ball bearings, according to Vice. The not so bright rotating toys have a underlying purpose, which is well hidden from their physical appearance, and it’s to turn people into brainwashed zombies.

A appalling new report on Russia’s state-owned Rossiya 24 proposed the idea last week that fidget spinners were being used by the Putin opposition to lure the youth with the promise of twirling tops (and, perhaps help them get Donald Trump elected?), the New York Times reports.

“It is a mystery why it has become so popular in Russia right now,” the Rossiya reporter said. “Who is promoting this to the masses so actively?”

And, it is a mystery to me how this aired on Russian television. Typically, before airing information, research is done, and sources are used to find out what in fact is going on. I don’t think either precaution was taken by the Russia station before this aired.

In addition, Ruslan Ostashko, editor-in-chief of Kremlin-supporting news org PolitRussia, offered his two cents on the subject.

“In such a manner, our opposition is luring the youth,” Ostashko said in another Rossiya report. “Those who understand political technologies, they understand very clearly that this simple thing is controlling the masses.”

While I don’t believe the necessary research took place, Ostashko has a point. The youth masses are being controlled. And, fidget spinners is the symbol of the confined freedom the youth truly has. Yes, it’s America, and you can do whatever you want. But, the youth, or millennials, appear to only be interested in the same five things: Dunkin Donuts, Chipotle, Social Media, Tinder, and cracking open a cold one with the boys. (Indeed, there’ll be a millennial at the bottom of this article telling me what I missed, but I’m ready).

In addition, remember Pokemon Go was a thing that millennials flocked to, causing many pedestrian car accidents. So, I don’t know if Putin’s administration to blame for the this, but perhaps it’s the advancement of emerging technologies. Because of the smartphone, people were able to play Pokemon Go. But, the phone has made people dumb, as people were crossing the street without looking just to catch a Pokemon. That’s weird. So, the youth’s being lured, but it’s by their own doing.

To further drive home the point, they’re keeping up with these advanced, emerging technologies that in theory should make life easier, but it’s memorized them. All millennials want to be the one that started the new trend, and end up consuming their time focusing on dumb things. Instead, millennials should walk outside, start a conversation with someone, and enjoy life. In fact, in an ideal world the life doesn’t involve a phone at all.
Spinners Ruining-3With that being said, Russia’s consumer protection agency is launching an investigation to get to the bottom of luring fidget spinners to “study the effect spinners are having on children, including the possible negative impact.”

All in all, it appears the news cycle in Russia is slow. But, there’s a subtle truth to their claim. Fortunately, it appears the fidget spinner hype has died down, and is coming to close. So, by the time the investigation wraps up the findings may not mean anything, as millennials will be on to the next.

    Better luck next time, Russia.

How Did Hackers Manage to Hack HBO?

By now, you’re bound to have heard about the hackers, known as ‘Mr Smith’, who found a way to steal information from US television network, HBO this week. As well as scripts from award-winning TV program Game of Thrones, (including one which was previously unaired) they also took internal documents and personal emails which have the potential to be sensitive and private from one of HBO’s top network executives.

The threat doesn’t stop with this attack and the limited release, as the hackers are holding HBO to ransom, threatening to release additional sensitive data if they aren’t given millions of dollars.

The video message from the hackers included a demand to the chief executive of HBO, Richard Pleper, asking for their ‘6 month salary in bitcoin’, which is rumored to be $6,000,000. Without that ransom paid, the hackers threaten to release more scripts, and information which they say would be damaging to the network.
    Privacy A-1

    Keeping Safe From Hackers

Hacks like this have become more and more common over the past few years, as the Internet of Things joins computer networks together in increasingly complex and intricate ways. Whether it’s the 2014 Sony hack, which included a searchable database of 30,000 documents, or the more recent WannaCry attack which affected over 200,000 victims including the British National Health Service, we all need to have our eyes open to cybercrime.

The usual rules for online safety apply to keep yourself protected, including being aware of how and when you are most vulnerable. If you do a lot of your finances and communication with services online, make sure not to open any suspicious emails, even if they include the company logo. Do not send any personal information by email either, especially if the correspondence makes you feel in any way uneasy.

For some people, it’s recreational activities which will make them open to attack. If you enjoy online gaming or video slots, always use a secure server, and never download documents sent by other players on the site.

Any files which you want to download should first be run through a virus checker like this online version by Kaspersky, which will automatically scan the file and make sure that it doesn’t contain any malicious software or anything unexpected.
    Privacy A-2

    On to the next…

Even if you manage to avoid being taken in by malware, it’s likely that the people responsible for attacks like the one on HBO will just continue with their next victims. ‘Mr Smith’ claims that HBO are their 17th victim, and only 3 have refused to pay the ransom.

HBO themselves have addressed the situation in an email to staff members, but have not answered whether they are planning to pay the ransom demand themselves. Rather, Pleper has been optimistic about their chances of managing their route through this crisis unscathed. “As has been the case with any challenge we have ever faced, I have absolutely no doubt that we will navigate our way through this successfully.”

Next Up: Meet Soul, The Hip-Hop Wordsmith

    0

    Words: Jasmine Johnson, hypefresh.

Soul is one of the dopest, rising lyricists in the game! Hailing from Memphis, TN, he has a story to tell to the world about this thing called life.

As you know, Yo Gotti, Moneybagg Yo, and Young Dolph are all from Memphis. And it’s easier to think that Soul is just another one of those rappers, but NO he is not. His verses are intriguing, and he expresses it with poetry-like concepts, reminiscent of how 2Pac crafted his songs. Mix it with a Vic Mensa swag type delivery, and you have a dangerous combination.

Soul has been persistent by putting out music rooted in topics that his fans relate to. Soul’s voice and stage presence takes his audience on a ride that captures their energy and paints a very vivid picture for consumption. As a young hip-hop rapper in the game, I feel like he would go places based on how creative his mind is and the message he puts in his music. I feel like Soul is the type of person, who is resilient, but will talk about it and grow from his mistakes.

With his most recent project out last year, he emphasized his artistry with a conceptual fixation pure talent and vulnerability, making him a standout artist in 2017!

Betting on a Winner – The Rise of Gambling in Movies

Betting on a Winner – The Rise of Gambling in Movies

Hollywood always had a certain fascination with risk, be it in planning the perfect heist, or betting it all on a long shot to win. It seems gambling and movies, in one way or another, seem to make strange and rather enticing bedfellows.

If one casts an eye back to the golden age of Hollywood movies, it is quite easy to see how the then fledgling gambling industry of Las Vegas and its older sibling, Atlantic City, made for perfect silver screen story telling. In fact, the incredible story of how a sleepy desert town in the middle of nowhere would be transformed into one of the world’s premier gambling destinations is its own muse.

    Hollywood’s Winning Gamble

Take a few key ingredients, namely organised crime, gambling, a few down on their luck fellows, and you already have most of what it takes to make the perfect gambling or heist Hollywood blockbuster.

Place those down on their luck fellows in the middle of one of America’s most notable success stories, Las Vegas, then, ensure to throw in some of the age’s greatest talents to play the parts including Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and others – aka “The Rat Pack”. Now, create the perfect heist, where the down on their luck guys fleece the mob of millions of dollars.

That’s pretty much how the original 1960 version of Ocean’s 11 was conceived and went on to become a classic of the genre. In fact, the Ocean’s 11 formula has been successfully applied to a string of heist movies revolving around the gambling industry. Ocean’s 11 was remade in 2001, redubbed as Ocean’s Eleven and starring the modern equivalent to the original Rat Pack, including George Clooney and Matt Damon.

Well, that’s one angle or aspect of the sprawling genre inspired by risk takers and gamblers, but what about movies that more directly relate to gambling? Read on below.

    Showdown at the Roulette Coral

Casinos and gambling have always been an intriguing subject and are often associated with a life of excitement, opulence and adventure. Perhaps one of the reasons for this association has to do with how casinos, and various casino games such as roulette and blackjack, have been used as vehicles in movies.

This can be something as simple as a background to a certain scene, like those found in any number of the James Bond movie franchise, or even as a catalyst, the backdrop to the ultimate showdown between the good guy and the bad guy. Rounders, starring Matt Damon as the more or less good guy and John Malkovich as the more or less bad guy, is a perfect example.

The Idea that Anyone Can Gamble and Win

Aside from the art of gambling, whether it is a game of poker, blackjack or roulette, being used as a vehicle where good and evil decide the winner, gambling in movies can itself be the central character. The act of gambling, can often be the central premise of a blockbuster movie and a prime example of this particular angle can be found in 2008’s ‘21’, a movie based on real events starring Kevin Spacey.
Winner-1This approach is extremely appealing as it speaks to that part in all of us that fantasises about driving down to Vegas and coming back with a life changing fortune. In 21, the story is inspired by the Ben Mezrich book “Bringing Down the House”, which tells the story of an MIT professor who organises a team of blackjack card counters with the aim of taking down the top Las Vegas casinos. The movie effectively put blackjack card counting in the spotlight, and increased the popularity of the game at online casinos all over the web.

Whether it’s about an adrenaline pumping heist, a plan to take down a Vegas giant with clever gambling strategies, or as the finale scene in a tense thriller, Hollywood has used gambling to fuel popular movie culture for decades, and will continue to do so. That, you can bet on!

Artist Spotlight: The Epitome of Brown

    The Epitome of Brown 1
    Contributor: Jasmine Johnson

Hypefresh is recognizing young rising artists. First we have hip-hop artist whose flow is mixed with Curren$y and a bit of Kendrick. His name is Brian Brown, a Nashville native, that has been putting out consistent summertime vibes and it only gets higher from here.

With his new released single, “Desires,” that came out on July 4, the hip-hop artist has been on a come up. This single is one of my personal favorites because of the positive message he delivers through the song. Brown’s artistry is for the culture and his flow is dope and astronomical. His vibes, flows and waves of his vision is far out of this world. Brown’s originality is something that the game has been missing. His creativity is different and brings a driven soul with a ‘90s laid back type vibe that you can ride to with friends at night cruising to the city. Recently he performed at a first annual Nashville festival called Hot Chicken on Independence Day. His performance are sometimes impromptu but will have you nodding your head to his music to either giving you something to think about. In the words of Brown, “we been working, grinding, dreaming, scheming.”

Artist Spotlight: Goody Has Something To Prove To Chicago

Goody Has Something To Prove To Chicago 1
Next up, we have hip-hop artist, Goody, a Chicago emcee whose flow is impeccable. He brings a familiar sound to the Windy City’s rap scene. I have been personally following him when he released his EP, 21 (To Anyone).

His music provides a window seat vibe of a young male growing up on the streets of Chicago. His EP reminds me of back in the day ‘90s r&b but adds his own Chicago flavor. One of his latest singles, “Know How” is a personal favorite of mine because it is an anthem for people who go out and show out and “know how” to get it. It’s a song that all hustlers and go getters should relate to. Another favorite is his recent single, “Roc-A-Fella Flow.” This song relates to me because you should focus on the real hustle of your goal and maneuver with any obstacle that comes your way. Reminiscent of young Hov’s grind and flow, Goody is next up so keep an eye out summer 17!

Poor, Williams and Woods at a story pitch session in San Quentin.

    First Ever Prison Podcast 1

The thought of life behind bars would make any person go into deep thought. At that moment, life would seem over even while you’re still breathing, with a heart beating. This fate didn’t stop two inmates (Antwan Williams and Earlonne Woods) from doing what has never been done behind bars: create a podcast.

The two started the series ‘Ear Hustle’ where they pitch stories to the listeners about what it’s like to spend life in jail. Alongside interviewing other inmates and special guests who come on the show for a feature. As amazing as this may be, there are many stipulations, rules and regulations (due to the prison’s schedule for inmates) which may delay production at times. Even with the ups and downs, they manage to make every second count towards the next episode.

Tips From The Stars: How Do Hip-Hop Artists Overcome Stage Fright

    0

How do Hip Hop artists overcome stage fright 1
‘His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy, there’s vomit on his sweater already – Mom’s spaghetti’ – when Eminem uttered that famous line during the soundtrack to his critically acclaimed debut movie ‘8 mile’, surprisingly, the bleach blonde rapper wasn’t trying to convey the shortcomings of his mother’s cooking.
How do Hip Hop artists overcome stage fright 2
Moreover, the profuse sweating and regurgitation of some two day old Bolognaise could be attributed to the sheer panic his 8 Mile character Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith Jr was feeling before going on stage. Indeed, ‘stage fright’ as its known in common parlance, is a phenomenon that has plagued music performers for centuries. As far back as the 1800’s it was reported that the Polish American pianist Leopold Godowsky was so nervous that according to the telegraph.co.uk on stage that he could only play at his best in a private setting. Another pianist, Vladimir Horowitz, is probably the worst sufferer in history. He stopped performing on several occasions, for years at a time, after losing his battle with nerves.

And despite all the cocksure swagger and bravado many of Hip Hop’s biggest stars can give out one hundred years later, stage fright and indeed performance anxiety doesn’t discriminate, no matter how confident one may appear.

In fact, it may not be an exaggeration to say that performance anxiety or the fear of ‘choking under pressure’ is the single biggest barrier to success in waking life and the reason behind it, according to psychologist Roberto Forzoni when speaking to Betway Insider is down to the human species’ innate tendency to always think about the future consequences.

“It’s a thought process,” he says. “Rather than thinking about what you do, you think about the consequence.”

And in the case of our 8 Mile protagonist Rabbit (see clip below), it’s clear his ‘thought process’ lays firmly with what his rap battle opponent and indeed the crowd, will think of him.

Furthermore the scientists at the University of Pittsburgh are in agreement that this state of high alert can play havoc with the brain’s basic functions and decision making processes, which explains rather aptly why Rabbit was quite literally lost for words in one of 8 Mile’s opening scenes.

But away from the fictional world of inner-city Detroit, how do some of the world’s biggest hip hop stars stay on top of their game before going on stage? We scoured the depths of the Internet and hand-picked some of our favorite rapper and singers’ best tips.

    Kanye West gets a haircut

Whilst on the face of it, it may seem a little odd (we expect nothing less of Kanye), Kanye West’s penchant for a pre-show haircut actually makes a lot of sense.
How do Hip Hop artists overcome stage fright 3
Appearance is closely tied to one’s self worth and by ensuring that his high fade is as slick as can be, Kanye is purposefully giving himself an extra dose of confidence before spitting bars on stage.

    Slim Shady pumps some iron

Now a veteran to the rap circuit, along with Lunchable Snack Packs, Eminem apparently requests that a couple of 25 pound dumbbells are sent to his dressing room before he goes on stage. Much like hip hop rival Kanye, Shady’s need to workout before a concert could be tied to appearance not to mention the increased bloodflow from doing a few sets of bicep curls could help him think more clearly when on stage.

    DopeThought gets spiritual
How do Hip Hop artists overcome stage fright 4
You might not be surprised to hear that DopeThought, a rapper whose name was literally spawned from the idea that positive thinking can produce extra amounts of dopamine in the brain which can lead to happiness, may use positive self-talk to help battle his demons on stage.

But as well as this, whilst speaking to the Salt Lake Tribune, the Utah-based rapper who is a devout Christian spoke of how he uses his relationship with God as a way to mentally prepare backstage:

“Go off alone, definitely pray. I’m spiritual. I practice natural breathing, ask God to help me spread the positive message.”

Here’s How Mega Artists Make Substantial Money Off Streams

    0

It was 2003, and the self proclaimed “best rapper alive”, Jay Z, released his eighth, and “final” album, The Black Album. However, three years later he would come out of retirement with his ninth album, Kingdom Come. More importantly, the album debuted atop the the Billboard 200, selling approximately 460 thousand copies, not including streams, in its first week. In fact, streams weren’t a thing then. However, in 2017 streams are the main metric measuring an artist’s success.
    jay-z-simple
While streams measure an artist’s success, obtaining an substantial amount of streams could lead to monetary success as well, in addition to a Gold or Platinum award from the RIAA. Let me explain.

To clarify, a stream, or streaming, means listening to music or watching video in ‘real time’, opposed to downloading the file, according to BBC. Also, the average payout for a Spotify, a streaming service, stream to labels and publishers is between $.0006-$.0084, according to Spotify‘s website. Now that we know what a stream is, let’s see why album copy sells have become obsolete.

Well, it was a slow burn, but it started with Napster. You can read about it here. Essentially, Napster users could download MP3 files of artists’ songs, cutting into album sales. For awhile, iTunes was the metric of an artist’s success, as it allowed singles to be sold, not just entire albums. However, in 2008 Spotify officially launched. And in 2013, the RIAA changed its certification of criteria pertaining to Gold and Platinum awards.

In 2017, 10 song downloads, or sales, equal one album purchase while 1,500 song streams equal an album purchase (Thank you, Jay Z). So, 1,500 song streams is an album purchase while one stream is valued between $.0006-$.0084. With this information, it appears obtaining Gold and Platinum awards has become easier while obtaining a substantial amount of money off of streams is damn near impossible. Well, the former is true, but the latter isn’t.

Indeed, Drake’s most recent release, More Life, benefited from streams to obtain its Gold award in its first week, but it also helped him obtain a substantial amount of money off of the streams as well. More Life debuted atop the Billboard 200 with approximately 505,000 album equivalent units. Remember, RIAA’s rules changed in 2013, so an album equivalent includes sales, song download sales, and streams. Astonishingly, More Life sold approximately 226,000 album copies.

    Drake wind pants
In fact, that was the lowest selling album for Drake pertaining to album sales.

But, what Drake, and a few others, know is in 2017 album sales are good, but with a strong following streams are great. According to 2dopeboyz, More Life obtained approximately 61 million streams on Spotify in its first day, breaking the single day streaming record. All in all, Drake, and a few others, have obtained streams in the billions, and that’s when money starts falling in. Yes, obtaining a billion streams is hard, but it’s only part of the streaming business model, according to Forbes.

Using Drake’s fellow Canadian native The Weeknd as an example, let’s break down the model. The Weeknd has amassed approximately 5.5 billion streams within the last two years. That’s a pretty penny, but what the success of his streams allowed him to do was receive an approximate $75 million touring advance. Drake and The Weeknd have combined have obtained approximately 17.5 billion streams since their Apple music, according to Forbes.

    The Weeknd
“I really wanted people who had no idea who I was to hear my project,” The Weeknd said to Forbes. “You don’t do that by asking for money.”

In addition, Chance the Rapper is another artist that’s capitalized off of streams. In fact, Chance has never sold a physical album, but he was Forbes’ 33rd highest paid entertainer in 2017, earning $33 million.

    chance-the-rapper
Essentially, the streaming business model is once you’ve obtained a core fan base you put an album, let your fans stream it millions, hopefully billions, of times, and present this data to advertisers and venues. The artists are giving away their music for free to all of the masses, and are receiving devoted fans in return, helping them maintain there streaming numbers. So, there’s money in the music industry, it’s just not where it used to be.

How To Celebrate Your Country’s Independence While Keeping Yours

    0

You’re sitting down with a bottle (if you’re lucky, an alcoholic bottle) in one hand and a cheeseburger in the other. You’re not worried about work, or the fact your daughter is pouring water bottles directly onto your son’s feet. All you care about is what you’re going to eat and drink next. A thought in your mind ponders, should you ask “where’s the Kan Jam?”

Well, you’re at your (insert family member) place, so no harm. Of course, I’m talking about your annual 4th of July cook out. However, there are many pitfalls you could fall into prior to that will preventing you from attending. Avoid thise amatuer pitfalls and you’ll be smooth sailing.

First and foremost, if you’re travelling for the holiday drive the speed limit. During holidays, everyone’s driving, and that means more risk for error. The left lane, or the fast lane, is slowed down, so the right lane, or slow lane is worse. So, plan accordingly. If you want to be at your desired location by 2pm, and it takes an hour to get there, at the latest I’d leave 12:30pm. Please, don’t rush to get where you’re going if you’re still running late.

A rule of thumb, no one will remember you were 30 minutes late to the cookout, but your car insurance will remember precisely the time and day of your accident, if you have one rushing to a cookout.

Moving on, alcohol is one of the most powerful things you can put into your body, so refuse the urge to drive home after 10 shots. Hopefully, you drove with someone who has a valid license and lives close enough to Uber home. But if you’re drunk early enough that you can pass out and wake up when it’s time to leave (the latter isn’t a bad option, if you must drink) then hey! Of course, have some drinks, because it’s the holiday. Have fun, but responsible fun.

Continuation from the last pitfall, leave the fireworks to the professionals. Okay, everyone feels invincible when they’re drunk, but that doesn’t mean they are. Obviously, I’m not talking about the fire poppers, but the fire crackers and anything else that could lead to physical harm to you if you don’t execute it properly. Inevitably, wherever you are, someone’s going to have fireworks. Remember, it’s hard figuring out to execute the fireworks sober.

That said, if you’re slumped up drunk somewhere I’d stay slumped up drunk. According to Pennsylvania State Police, there are permitted novelty items/sparklers, but State law prohibits the use of Consumer and Display Fireworks in Pennsylvania without a permit. Beside the fact you’re potentially performing an illegal act, and the firework is hard to execute, you’re drunk. There’s too many variables against you for a happy ending here.

Winding the list down, remember what the holiday is for. According to History, the fourth of July, or Independence day, has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941. However, the holiday has been celebrated since 1776 as the birth of America’s Independence. Congress voted for America’s independence on July 2nd, but didn’t approve the Declaration until the 4th.

In 2017, the holiday’s turned into a cookout celebration, as 80 percent of Americans attend a barbecue, picnic or cookout. However, 76 percent get together with family while 63 percent attend a fireworks display. Ironically, 66 percent (should be a hundred, because the holiday’s celebrating America’s independence) display an American flag.

To round things out, now that you remember what the holiday is for don’t overdo your outfit. Two of the three flag colors is fine, but very few people can pull off all three without looking like a firecracker. Less is more. Instagram pictures are cool, but avoid the cliche captions.

With that in mind, also remember to not partake in the aforementioned pitfalls on Independence day that could jeopardize your independent freedom, and you have a successful holiday celebration!

    Happy Holidays!

Air Jordan’s Appeal Is In Its Versatility, Making It Universal

    0

Nostalgically looking back to my junior year of undergrad, I remember taking the department’s required Comm 310: Communication Research Methods. Essentially, my partner and I picked a research topic and created a full APA research paper. Eventually, we settled on brands with the most clout, or were the most influential. And atop our list was Air Jordan. For our research, we focused solely on the brands footwear compared to its competitors.

Unlike most sneaker brands, Air Jordan is genuinely universal, as any gender, age or race has worn the sneaker. For example, I could go out for lunch with my grandfather and father, and all three of us could potentially be sporting Air Jordans. Interestingly enough, all three of us could be sporting the same exact Air Jordan sneaker as well, as the brand is known for its limited releases, and reincarnation of past silhouettes.

For some reason, perhaps the initial roll out, a certain type of person isn’t attached to the Air Jordan sneaker. Using New Balance as an example, when you see the notorious white New Balance 608v4 you more than likely associate the sneaker with an old, more than likely Caucasian, man.
Air Jordans Appeal Is In Its Versatility
Perhaps, there’s a difference in cultures, as when you see the mz50 1v1 New Balance sneakers you more than likely associate it with African American youth, especially in the greater Philadelphia area. But, the Air Jordan has historically permeated every culture.

vBut, the love for the Air Jordan has just started, as I’m not the only one with an appreciation for the sneaker. I sport three pairs of Air Jordans, but Aflamu Johnson edged me out with an infinite love of the brand.
    Air Jordan Wedding
“Jordans are, and will always be the top crème de la crème of sneakers,” Aflamu Johnson said to Uproxx. “You can wear Jordans to a wedding.”

According to Uproxx, Johnson’s collection of Air Jordans is worth approximately 70 thousand dollars. Reexamining an earlier point, Air Jordan’s limited releases has provided consumers the opportunity to flip, or buy multiple quantities of the sneaker, and resell them online for as much as triple the price. But, Johnson’s content holding on to his sneakers for now. Essentially, purchasing sneakers is seen as an investment within the industry.

Similar to purchasing old cars and waiting until they become antique, sneaker hoarders sit on their sneakers until the price value has peaked. Johnson said to Uproxx he knew a man who sold his sneaker collection for over 150 grand, and used the cash for a down payment on an apartment. Well, beside the fact he made a down payment on an apartment, and not a house the example shows you how lucrative sneaker hoarding could be, especially as a side job.

    (Did someone say early retirement?)

Besides early retirement, think about the financial security the money tied up in sneakers Johnson has. If money gets tight, simply sell a pair or two of Air Jordans.

“Just in case something happens,” Johnson said. “I know that I have money in the closet.”

But, it’s more than just purchasing, and reselling the sneakers. Air Jordan is timeless.

“Every NBA player, every rapper, and hip hop, R&B guy, they have a Jordan collection,” Johnson said. “White or black. Even baseball guys will have a Jordan collection. Boxers will wear Jordan trunks. College football teams will wear Jordan undershirts. And I mean the jump man, the Jumpman logo will be on the shirts forever.”

So there you have it! We could go on forever about the impact and appeal of Air Jordan. Ultimately, it exists as a status symbol, not limited to African American culture. No matter what price point you obtained your Air Jordan, you all were revered for wearing one of the most iconic sneakers in global history.

    Problematic? Slightly.

    Factual?

    Yes.
