Earlier this month, Yungeen Ace’s meteoric rise took a dark turn when he and three friends, including his brother, were attacked in a drive-by shooting. Though he attempted to shield his brother from the hail of bullets by using his own body, getting shot 8 times, as he told his 285k Instagram followers, Yungeen Ace was the only survivor of the shooting. After spending weeks recuperating in the hospital, Yungeen Ace has a new lease on life, and he intends to turn the tragedy of his brother’s and his friends’ loss into artistic triumph. Look for more music from Yungeen Ace to come this year.

Keyanta Bullard, better known as Yungeen Ace, is a talented 20-year old hip-hop artist making an early splash in the industry. Born in Chicago and raised in Jacksonville, FL (Duval County), Ace and his crew, the Yungeen Gang, have been recording and releasing music for a couple years now cultivating a loyal fanbase that supports their every move. Having experienced a lot of hardships growing up, Ace took his impressive skillset and contagious passion and put it all towards his music.

The first big moment for the southern spitter came in January of 2017 when the Yungeen Gang released a video titled “Go To War,” which ended up raking in over a million views (currently at 1.8 million) soon after its release. That pivotal moment gave Ace and his team the confidence to keep going. From there, the young and hungry rappers released multiple songs and videos adding to their fanbase by the day. By 2018, Ace had signed a deal with Cinematic Music Group and went on to release a slew of new singles to start the year. The first single, “All In,” was his passionate message to the world that he’s putting everything on the line to ensure success. That video has since reached over 3 million views, which led to Ace’s next three follow up singles: “Find Myself” (1.3 million views), “Betrayed” (1.2 million views) and “Gorillaz” (462,000 views).

All of these single releases earned Ace a ton of major press looks including coverage and support from the likes of Complex, HipHopDX, ELEVATOR, Miss Info, and so many others. Meet John Canon: The Photographer Behind 21 Savage’s Rise To Fame

    0

Upon glancing at John Canon’s portfolio on Instagram, I noticed two significant trends in his work: candidness and informality.

While some photographers attempt to capture musicians, in what seems like, a completely staged and artificial position, Canon’s photographs are merely the documentation of what happens in a rappers life. 21 Savage’s rise to prominence has been largely due to the professional nature of the LA based photographer. Whether at a show, media interview, club, or charity function — Canon is tasked with portraying the 25 year old in a refreshing, hip, and distinctive way.

Meet John Canon The Photographer (2)

In a piece written in 2016 on TheFader, he noted that

“Touring is different with a young new artist because it forces you to be a fly on the wall which made me better as a photographer. [21] is not necessarily the person that has a bunch of poses so you gotta catch him in the moment. Like, he’s an introvert.”

Canon has begun to work with other rappers — notably Young thug, Migos, and Lil Yachty: but he also freelances with more underground, emerging artists. One is Atlanta rapper Yung tip, who was friends with 21’s little brother Tayman before he was murdered in 2017. It is certainly worth noting that Canon’s photography varies based on who he is capturing. While he takes candid pictures of 21, Canon seems to adapt his vision based on his perception of how the artist should look to the public.

Canon is only getting started as a photographer for some of the biggest names in rap, but his work demonstrates his unparalleled ability to portray artists in a candid way.Meet John Canon

Dear Artist: Here’s How To Take Criticism, Make It Work For You

It’s understandable for a musician to be sensitive about their music.

Art is a reflection of the thought process and ideals of an artist. It is essentially an extension of them. Also, a song, let alone an album, requires a lot of creative and technical labor to put together. So, once a musician finally produces this melody that they’ve worked so hard to make, they may be emotional when faced with criticism. Here’s the thing: people are going to have opinions about  music. That is just a fact that a musician cannot control. What a musician can control, though, is how they react to those opinions, particular critiques. There is a right way and there is a wrong way.

    The Wrong Way

The wrong way to take criticism on music is to completely dismiss it. No matter how good a musician is, they are not perfect. There is always room for growth in any art; music is no exception to this rule. By listening to critics, a musician can find weak areas in their music that they need to strengthen. By ignoring critics, a musician could never find those areas and they’ll continue to be weak. An example is the recent attack on Wanna Thompson by Nicki Minaj.

In late June, after critiquing Minaj’s work, Thompson opened her twitter DMs to find the artist maliciously attacking her for it. Minaj disregarded all of the points brought up by Thompson and used personal insults as a way to discredit her criticism. If you are a musician reading this article, that is the exact opposite of what you want to do.

First of all, no music journalist should be denigrated like that for their opinion. Also, Minaj may have overlooked an aspect of her music that could be improved upon. Now, not all criticism is valid. There is plenty of outright unintelligent analysis’s. However, a musician needs to still listen to them. There could be good or bad advice from critics. An artist will never know unless they listen.

    The Right Way

The right way to take criticism on music is to acknowledge it. A musician needs to both review their own works and criticism. From there, they can decide whether the criticism is valid or not. Musicians need to let go of their egos if they really want to make great music. While some skill in music can come naturally, a large majority of it is produced from time and practice. Most artists have to work hard at developing their own style of music. They need to be constantly improving and changing their work. While criticism might not be fun to listen to, it can illuminate functions of an artist’s music and hold them back. An artist listening to a critique can find good advice to take their music to the next level. From there, they can become better.

It does not matter what you do. You are not perfect. You can be critiqued what produce, especially if you do a creative form of expression, such as music. But, how you react to it, can define how good you will be.

New Jack Swing & R&B: Is Bruno Mars A Culture Vulture?

    0

New Jack Swing, R&B and soul aren’t just forms of black music, but simply forms of  American music.

Bruno Mars, one of the most admired acts in music, is the latest to be accused of appropriating black culture. Culture appropriation is when someone uses components of a culture that isn’t their own, and not showing or telling where they got them from. Several instances however, point to the crooner, not actually being responsible…

Since his arrival to the music scene, Mars has included music genres such as New Jack Swing, rhythm and blues, and soul into his albums.

On many occasions, Mars, who is of Filipino and Puerto Rican decent, and real name is Peter gene Hernandez, pay tribute to his African American predecessors frequently. Sought after black musicians have came to his defense as well.

Take one of Mars most recent songs off of his latest album for example, “Finesse”. Mars sings over a New Jack Swing beat, that was frequently used by black artists in the 1990’s. In the remix video featuring rapper Cardi B, at the very end it reads “Dedicated to In Living Color”, a popular show in the 1990’s that was a platform for up and coming black artists, and actors.
    New Jack Swing (3)

Back in November of 2017, Mars’ live performance at the legendary Apollo Theatre was aired, as he performed songs from his latest album, 24K Magic. The Apollo , a TV show that Mars grew up watching with his family, was a stage where many esteemed black artists of yesteryear performed. Mars had one goal that night, to bring everyone together under one roof, no matter what you look like.
Mars is not the first artist accused, and won’t be the last. Justin Timberlake, Eminem, and Robin Thicke have all been in the spotlight for acts of appropriating black culture, with the ladder in legal disputes for taking the sample of a Marvin Gaye song without consent.
“So, if you were born in the 1970s and 1980s….dancing in your living room to New Editions “NE HeartBreak” or watching Janet’s “Rhythm Nation 1814″ videos as a kid….it’s called INFLUENCE, which has no racial barriers…,” tweeted hip-hop producer 9thwonder, which has since been deleted.
    New Jack Swing (4)

Mars like many before him. makes it clear who he was influenced by. New Jack Swing hasn’t been heard or used in decades.

Charlie Wilson showed his support of Mars using the sound, tweeting a photo that reads.

“The sounds from the late 80’s and early 90’s hadn’t been present until Bruno and he did a damn good job bringing it back!!! Just want to join in the convo and stand up for my friend @BrunoMars!✌🏾🎤🕺🏽#callingallmylovlies #chunky #versaceonthefloor #finesse #24kmagic pic.twitter.com/v2xHF9GPB8

    — Charlie Wilson (@ImCharlieWilson) March 9, 2018
If these well respected people in the music industry are supporting artists who aren’t African American like Mars and others who are carrying on the legacy of great black artists, who came before them, then why can’t everyone else?
It is especially important in today’s society that we all come together as one, no matter what race, religion or creed. Mars shouldn’t be excluded from popular black genres for the simple fact that he isn’t African American, because for everything the United States stands for, that would be hypocritical. New Jack Swing, R&B, and soul aren’t just forms of black music, but simply forms of  American music.
