5 Tips On How To Properly Thrift Shop On A Budget

    0

As a broke college student, I had to learn how to prioritize my money. Who knew choosing between drinks at the bar on a Friday night and your next meal could be so hard? Money gets tight. Real tight. But you find ways to finesse. Coupons. Student discounts. Finding the cheapest alternative for anything and everything.

It was here that I decided to explore the world of thrifting. If, for whatever reason you don’t know what thrifting is, it refers to the act of shopping from store to store in search of discounted fashion items, usually previously owned or vintage. I know from talking with other people, there is some stigma towards thrift shopping. All thrift stores may be considered cluttered, dirty, or lacking in quality clothing. From my own experience, none of that is true.

Let’s debunk these misconceptions real quick:

First, every thrift shop has its own way of organizing, but a lot of them arrange their merchandise like any typical clothing store, by size, color, style, and/or gender.

Second, thrift shops are generally clean. Okay sure, it might be a little dusty and probably smells like it too, but remember where you’re at. It doesn’t mean it’s dirty. It’s just that thrift shops hold a lot of different smells from a lot of different people’s old clothing in a single space, which can generate that specific scent.

Lastly, thrift shops have more than enough quality options to choose from. Emphasis on quality. I know many places such as Buffalo Exchange have standards for what they accept and put up for sale on their racks. Thrift stores are known for its variety. Depending on how the store is organized, you might have to search a bit for your size, but that is as far as your worries go. You most likely won’t walk out empty-handed.

I am no thrift-store guru extraordinaire, but I have 5 quick tips that helped me through my shopping experience that might be helpful to you too:

Tip #1: Know where to go.

I heard about many thrift shops in my area through word of mouth, but I also found The Thrift Shopper to be helpful in finding new ones. This website is an easy tool to finding a store near you, providing you with their contact information, hours, and other additional information like the charity they may be associated with.

Tip #2: Know what you’re looking for.

This is very important because otherwise, you’ll be in that store for years. Thrift shopping is an exciting experience. For me, any form of shopping is an exciting experience. You know, it’s all fun and games until you walk out with everything but what you initially came for. To avoid getting lost in the sauce, make a list.

    Tip #3: Research the trends.

This goes with tip #2 in terms of preparation. Something I like to do is look through magazines or things online beforehand to find inspiration for looks I can recreate and make my own. Don’t be afraid to tailor or repurpose.

Tip #4: Look out for deals.

Many thrift shops have specials, frequently taking 50%, 75%, or sometimes even more off on all their items. It may be on certain days of the week. Stores often have discounts for specific groups of people like military vets, senior citizens, and students, too. Ask your local thrift shop what they have to offer.

    Tip #5: Patience is key.

You have to go into thrifting knowing you might not find what you’re looking for right away. You’re gonna have to search for it and that’s all just part of the experience. It might feel like forever, but you will find it in no time.

Ammo Stilo: Bridging the Gap Between the Corner and the Runway

Fueled from a creative background, Ammo Stilo is a fearless and self expressive street wear brand evolving into a household name, and one that bridges the gap between the corner and the runway. Created by a group of young men, Jared Richardson, Trebor Adams, Tom “1Tyme” Clarke, Quan Cruise, Zaire and Eric Scott; Ammo Stilo has no boundaries. It is the opposite of simple and stands for fearless expression.

In updated news of their brand, featuring Sonny Digital at their pop up shop with UBIQ, Ammo Stilo just recently launched their newest collection, the “WAVE”.

Who inspired the creation of Ammo Stilo?

We are our own unique entity building to pave our own way, however we admire Kanye for his free thinking. Kanye inspired the ascetic of our barrier breaking designs and the idea of creating your own.

How is your brand different from others?

We simply have a whole mentality of not being afraid to go against society norms. We embody a culture of creating our own brand and content and we aren’t afraid to step out. In addition to that, every piece tells a story. Its not just like we say okay we’re about to make a t-shirt because we think it looks cool. Everything is significant and behind everything we do, there’s a purpose. That’s really what makes us different.

What figures have been seen wearing your brand?

People from Dave East, Young Thug, Levi Carter, Lil Durk, G-Herbo, Uzi, Bankroll Fresh, Jaylen Strong, The FreshSide Twins, to Cold Heart Underwater Squad have been seen rocking Ammo Stilo.

What’s an example of a story you told through your pieces?

The Stilo Jacket was inspired by a mood. When you get flowers, it gives you a sense of joy. Other clothes of ours are usually loud and dark, but the jacket was a mixture of both. The jacket is reversible, so its like a yin-yang type of thing, you get the opposite as well. Most times my (Jared Richardson) mood is fuck America, but this was made after being in a happy place.

What’s an example of your “Fuck America” piece?

Our revolt trucker hat represents going against America. Trebor said, the entire discrimination movement is becoming so blatant and obvious so our reply was the same way. We acknowledged it loudly. We didn’t want our message to be hidden, but rather wanted it to be known that we live in a racist society, and to fuck America with three K’s (KKK).

The hockey jersey is a representation of no one being perfect. We put a nun on there smoking a cigarette because its not typical to see a nun smoking or flawed for that matter, so we used that to symbolize the idea that no one is perfect.

The basketball jersey was inspired by a NY vibe. We were at Rutgers park one day and it was just a nice day. The sun was out, people were playing basketball and enjoying life and we just wanted to embrace the whole NY mentality and capture that moment. A lot of our piece’s capture certain moments by honing in on a certain time, holding that exact feeling we had at that moment and then bring those moments into a reality and sharing them. Trebor says, similar to music, it’s a moment and time people talk about through their lyrics that other people can relate to. So the same with our clothes, we like to bring the moments to life that people can recognize and relate to. 1Tyme adds on and says, we like to look at our clothes as we look at music. Make sure your piece of art is always better than your last.

We also wanted to play on the limited idea. We want to get people in tune with what we are are doing. If you miss out on a release and see a celebrity or one of your friend’s wearing it, now you have to make sure you are ready for the next thing because its not like we are going to make it again. We are always on a new WAVE, thinking of something different and innovative.

    What are your future goals?

We plan to grow Ammo Stilo’s awareness, be heavily retailed ready,  and featured in larger boutiques in places such as New York, Paris and Tokyo. We don’t want the brand to just be everywhere, we want it to be exclusive to both national and international locations. Our major goal is to collaborate with Vogue and actually meet the runway. 2017, we are just going to take over more lanes outside of the fashion industry and expand our creativity. We all inspire each other, but we don’t just want to inspire each other, we want to inspire the world.

How Chicago’s Schools Should Spend Chance the Rapper’s $1 Million

Chance the Rapper’s recent $1 million pledge to the Chicago Public School system is generating major praise from celebrities and the public alike, including former First Lady Michelle Obama and Black Lives Matter activist Deray McKesson among countless others. In a press conference yesterday at Westcott Elementary School located on his hometown’s South Side, Chance proudly extended his support to the education system in Chicago which has consistently faced massive budget cuts over the years.

The noteworthy donation comes just days after the Grammy-winning rapper’s less-than-perfect meeting with Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner regarding the state of Chicago’s school system. Nonetheless, the $215 million budget shortfall for the education system makes Chicago Public Schools in dire need of the funds and every little bit matters. Here are some of the ways that the public school system should invest the money.

    1.) Monetary Incentives for Teachers.

As it is common knowledge that teachers have one of the demanding jobs in America (especially those in severely underfunded areas), it should be expected that educators be amply rewarded for their efforts. However, instead of merely increasing the salaries of Chicago’s teachers, the generous donation should go towards an incentivized program that motivates them to perform highly and better prepare their students. Taking the form of raises and cash bonuses, the proposed program should measure a variety of factors (such as student engagement and performance) to determine whether or not a teacher is deserving of such award. Not only are teachers paid more and feeling more fulfilled in their role but students are also gaining a more productive and satisfying education experience – the ultimate goal.

2.) Funding for After-School Arts Programs.

Considering Chance the Rapper is a musician, it is more than fitting to use his funds to support after-school arts initiatives for students. Aside from the typical (albeit totally valid) “arts and music programs keep children off of the street” argument, such programs provide valuable outlets to the youth for creative expression. From gaining exposure to computer graphic design or practice engineering music, students are, of course, spending more time doing something productive rather than getting into trouble; but, even more important is that they are allowed to embark on opportunities not often available for them and expand on their passions. Maybe this could fund the next Chance the Rapper.

    3.) Free (or Subsidized) Meals.

Although heartbreaking to even imagine, some children only consume one meal each day and that is often their school lunch. For one to even expect that a student with an empty stomach be fully attentive and engaged in class is simply astonishing. Therefore, the final recommendation is that Chance’s funds can assist with the free and subsidized meal program for qualifying students to continue appeasing the appetite’s of our youth.

Hopefully, Chance’s generous $1 million pledge inspires more to donate to Chicago Public Schools to combat the large budget shortfalls. Before being quick to demonize or look down on the people in Chicago, you should maybe think about what you have done to help improve the situation.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Afro Punk

Last month, the organizers of the Afropunk Festival announced their plans to expand to Johannesburg, South Africa in December 2017. This a pretty big deal considering its start as a free music festival in Brooklyn, New York. Believe it or not, many, many people don’t even know what the Afropunk Festival is or where it came from. For a while, I was one of those people. Shameful, I know. I came across it by accident some time ago and I’ve been completely fascinated by it ever since. For those of you who do not know what this is all about, I am here to help y’all out.

First, let me lay down some history.

The punk scene has always been overwhelmingly white, especially in the United States. The faces that have represented classic punk rock music have mostly been white bands like The Ramones, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Misfits, etc. People often didn’t associate this type of music with black people, which made it appear as if there weren’t any in the scene.

The term “afro-punk” refers to the presence of African Americans and black people in general in the punk and alternative music cultures. This whole concept began back in 2003. 14 years ago, Afro-Punk: The Documentary made its debut, produced by Matthew Morgan and written/directed by James Spooner. The 66 minute documentary spotlighted black people in the American punk scene and explored the ways they find their place in a predominantly white music communities.

Matthew Morgan, who is also a music industry executive, saw that the indie rock/punk/hardcore scenes appealed to more than just a Caucasian audience and decided to give a voice to people of different backgrounds who identify with this music as well.

The documentary led to the birth of Afro Punk Fest in 2005 at Brooklyn Academy of Music. The music festival served to celebrate and unify all aspects of Afropunk culture: music, film, art, fashion, and any other form of self-expression. This became more than just a creative community in a single city. It became a movement that reached the masses. Alternative kids around the world who never felt they had a place they belonged finally found their home. This is largely thanks to Afropunk’s online presence spreading its word and creating a space to connect.

The New York Times describes the AFROPUNK movement as “the most multicultural festival in the US,” which fits it perfectly. The community reflects punk and alternative music, but as it continued to evolve, it started to incorporate urban culture. This is strongly exemplified in its fashion. You see people rocking afros with the sides shaved off, creating a fro-hawk. You see people tribal print garments with crazy colored hair and skate shoes. The Afropunk style is unmatched.
    Didn’t Know About Afro Punk-4
Since its debut, Afro Punk Fest has been to Atlanta and made its way overseas to Paris and soon, Johannesburg. AFROPUNK has plans to bring the movement to other cities, both in the United States and across the globe.

I highly suggest watching the Afro-Punk documentary. It is available on Youtube free of charge. Check it out below:

Should Nicki Respond to Remy Ma?

In less than a week’s span, Remy Ma has dropped two brutal diss records directed at Nicki Minaj with last Saturday’s (Feb. 25) “ShETHER” and this past Thursday’s (March 2) “Another One.” So far, Minaj’s only retaliation against Remy Ma has been an Instagram post (which she later deleted) where she mocked the dismal sales of Remy’s collaboration album with Fat Joe. However, the self-proclaimed “Queen of Rap” has yet to fire back with a proper diss track towards Remy Ma. As the hip-hop community yearns a proper follow-up to continue fueling the rap feud, it makes you question: Should Nicki respond to Remy Ma?

This isn’t the first high-profile feud Nicki Minaj has been involved in. The beginning of her mainstream career is largely marked by her bad blood with female rap veteran Lil’ Kim. While Kim dropped the vicious Black Friday mixtape (which directly referenced Minaj), Nicki released “Roman’s Revenge” and “Stupid Hoe” – although she later denied that the former was a diss to Lil’ Kim. On the other hand, Azealia Banks has also taken multiple shots at her but Nicki has seemingly taken the higher road.

In contrast, Nicki has been much more vocal in her non-rap feuds. From “going bezerk” on Mariah Carey to calling out Taylor Swift, and of course the infamous showdown with Miley Cyrus at the VMAs, Nicki Minaj apparently has no problem airing out her beefs with female singers. Why is this not the same for her problems with fellow rappers?

Hip-hop – a genre largely shaped by its competitive nature – has a history of feuding artists battling for the top spot, including Tupac vs. Biggie, Jay-Z vs. Nas, and 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule among countless others. When one rapper disses another, it’s expected that the other comes back twice as hard. Sure, it’s only been roughly a week and even Nas took two months to fire back at Jay-Z with “Ether” but times are much different today. In the social media age, everything is instant, and if you refuse to strike back quick enough, you have pretty much suffered that loss.

In order to maintain her credibility in the hip-hop world, Nicki Minaj should definitely respond to Remy Ma.

Cardi B Signs Major Deal With Atlantic Records

Cardi B is taking the world by storm. After announcing her departure from Love and Hip Hop: New York at the end of last year, the reality star has been doing big things in terms of her career. Her recurring role on hit BET show Being Mary Jane. Her mixtape release, Gangsta B***h Music Vol. 2. Cardi B is doing her thang these days.

According to The Jasmine Brand, Cardi B has landed a major deal with Atlantic Records: “They believe in Cardi’s talent. She’s signed a multi-million dollar deal with Atlantic.”

The reports have not yet been confirmed or denied by the Brooklyn emcee, but it is very clear she is ready to take her career to the next level. In an interview with Vibe Viva last year, Cardi B talks about her work ethic.

“Everything I do, I take seriously. Everything, everything, everything,” she said. “Everything I do takes me time. I don’t want people to think I became a rapper because I was on Love and Hip Hop. There are a couple of songs that are on [Gangsta B***h Music Vol. 1] that I been did before Love and Hip Hop, it just wasn’t completely perfect. It wasn’t completely perfect and everything takes time. It took me like a year to complete the mixtape. Everything I do, it takes a lot of time for me to do it because only the best sells, you know? If you want people to take you seriously, you gotta do the best.”

Fans had high hopes that Cardi B would reconsider leaving the reality show, but sources are saying she no longer has any interest in being apart of the Love & Hip Hop cast, believing the drama associated with the show would get in the way of her being taken seriously in this industry.

She will be missed, but I know Cardi has something bigger and better in store for her fans.

DMX and The Ruff Ryders Announce Reunion Concert

The Ruff Ryders are reuniting for special 20th anniversary concert (which may possibly evolve into a full-blown tour).

Barclays April 21st will be a night to remember !!! #letsgetiton.”

The news follows the release of DMX’s comeback single “Bane is Back” earlier this year. Also, Swizz Beatz recently debuted an unreleased track featuring DMX, Jay-Z, Nas, and Jadakiss this past weekend at a beat battle with Just Blaze.

Although the general public sale begins this Friday, pre-sale tickets are available now here.

Oprah Winfrey Is Reconsidering A 2020 Run

    0

In the wake of Donald Trump’s capture of the White House, Oprah Winfrey is rethinking her own credentials for a spot as the leader of the “Free World.”

“I never considered the question even a possibility,” she told financier David Rubenstein on his Bloomberg Television program when asked whether she might consider a run. “It’s clear you don’t need government experience to be elected president of the United States”.

The billionaire entertainer is hardly the only celebrity without government experience seeking the oportunity to uphold (or destroy) the values of our nation. From Kanye West to Zuckerberg and Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger, , it might be the endof the f*cking world.

But, is this a gimmick or will Oprah really be the next President of the United States? Only time will tell.

Florida A&M University Launches 24 Hour Black News Network

    0

Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, also known as FAMU, is making history this year. The HBCU has reportedly launched a 24-hour black news program, which will be airing in more than a dozen cities. The network has efforts to educated and entertain, while changing the way the black community is depicted in the current mainstream media.

There are high hopes for the program to become that go-to station for black viewers, similar to how Univision and Telemundo does for the Latino community.

The homebase for Black Television Network Channel will be at FAMU’s School of Journalism and Graphic Design, which is going to be very beneficial to the students who go there. Students will be given the chance to work with reporters and producers, gaining that experience in a professional environment. It will also create jobs for nearly 100 people.

The news programs has big plans for itself, expecting a viewership around 33 million upon its launch, which is set for February 2018.

Tallahassee Mayor John Marks and BTNC partner expressed his excitement for the news program at the ribbon-cutting ceremony last week.

“This has been a long time coming,” Marks told WCTV. “I really feel so proud to be a part of what I know is going to be revolutionary as well as evolutionary. We think we can be educational and informative not just to the African-American community, but to the nation.”
