Should Nicki Respond to Remy Ma?

In less than a week’s span, Remy Ma has dropped two brutal diss records directed at Nicki Minaj with last Saturday’s (Feb. 25) “ShETHER” and this past Thursday’s (March 2) “Another One.” So far, Minaj’s only retaliation against Remy Ma has been an Instagram post (which she later deleted) where she mocked the dismal sales of Remy’s collaboration album with Fat Joe. However, the self-proclaimed “Queen of Rap” has yet to fire back with a proper diss track towards Remy Ma. As the hip-hop community yearns a proper follow-up to continue fueling the rap feud, it makes you question: Should Nicki respond to Remy Ma?

This isn’t the first high-profile feud Nicki Minaj has been involved in. The beginning of her mainstream career is largely marked by her bad blood with female rap veteran Lil’ Kim. While Kim dropped the vicious Black Friday mixtape (which directly referenced Minaj), Nicki released “Roman’s Revenge” and “Stupid Hoe” – although she later denied that the former was a diss to Lil’ Kim. On the other hand, Azealia Banks has also taken multiple shots at her but Nicki has seemingly taken the higher road.

In contrast, Nicki has been much more vocal in her non-rap feuds. From “going bezerk” on Mariah Carey to calling out Taylor Swift, and of course the infamous showdown with Miley Cyrus at the VMAs, Nicki Minaj apparently has no problem airing out her beefs with female singers. Why is this not the same for her problems with fellow rappers?

Hip-hop – a genre largely shaped by its competitive nature – has a history of feuding artists battling for the top spot, including Tupac vs. Biggie, Jay-Z vs. Nas, and 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule among countless others. When one rapper disses another, it’s expected that the other comes back twice as hard. Sure, it’s only been roughly a week and even Nas took two months to fire back at Jay-Z with “Ether” but times are much different today. In the social media age, everything is instant, and if you refuse to strike back quick enough, you have pretty much suffered that loss.

In order to maintain her credibility in the hip-hop world, Nicki Minaj should definitely respond to Remy Ma.
