Jesy Nelson Comes Forward ‘Blackfishing’ Claims, Nicki Responds

    Jesy Nelson Faces Backlash

After releasing her debut single, “Boyz,” featuring Nicki Minaj, singer Jesy Nelson, previously a member of Little Mix, is getting backlash for her music video. Some people may consider the lyrics and appearance as ‘blackfishing.’

    Accusations Pour In

The accusations began to grow about Jesy Nelson shortly after her music video was released, and the people that had an issue were closer to Ms. Nelson than she had thought. A former singer of Little Mix, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, allegedly called out Ms. Nelson to ‘blackfishing’ and sent messages about the singer.

During an Instagram live on Sunday, Oct. 10, the singer had a few things to say regarding the accusations, and Nicki Minaj acknowledged the allegations from former singer, Ms. Pinnock.

Ms. Minaj defended the singer on the live:

“You should be free to express yourself through your body and makeup as long as it doesn’t harm anyone or promote negativity towards any race or culture.”

As people realized, it was clear to many who Nicki Minaj was talking about. “I’ve noticed that some individuals take advantage of situations when they find it advantageous for themselves,” said Minaj. “…now, as soon as she has a video with Nicki Minaj and Puffy, she’s reaching out to radio stations through text messages.”

The singer opened up about her song in how it was meant to showcase her love for R&B music. Then she emphasized that this was never an issue when she was a member of Little Mix.

“I was in a group with two women of color for nine years, and it was never brought up to me up until the last music video that I did with them,” said Ms. Nelson.

Shortly after, Ms. Pinnock unfollowed Ms. Minaj on Instagram, leaving many to wonder who was in the wrong.
