Sofia Zadar’s Latest Single “RED” Holds Space for Anger and Restoration

Sofia Zadar, the Alt-Pop project of Romanian queer musician Maria Sgarcitu, has just released their latest single, “RED.” The song explores the themes of anger, information, and agency while proposing outlets for anger outside of aggression. “RED” mixes layers of distorted vocal samples with Experimental Pop, Raggaeton, Balkanic beats, and club-inspired bass lines, creating a unique and dynamic sound.

The single is part of Sofia Zadar’s upcoming EP, Hictopia, set to be released in May 2023. The EP will be accompanied by a music video shot by Romanian underground artist Andreea Irimia and promoted through local and international press. The release will also be part of Sofia Zadar’s Hictopia Tour, starting on May 26th.

Sofia Zadar’s sound is constantly shapeshifting, but their aesthetic remains rooted in the desires of local queer communities. Their lyrics explore posthumanist and utopian visions through a trauma-informed lens. With “RED,” Sofia Zadar creates a space for restoration and liberation through the power of music.
