Hulu Announced Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told Documentary

Hulu has unveiled “Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told,” an original documentary series that delves into the dramatic journey of the notorious Black Spring Break event.

Commencing in the mid-80s as a modest picnic for HBCU students on Spring Break, Freaknik rapidly evolved into an extensive weekend festival encompassing dance contests, concerts, parties, sporting events, job fairs, rap sessions, and more. As the late ’90s rolled around, the event began to face mounting criticism from the community. Back in 1998, the Atlanta Committee for Black College Spring Break called for its cessation, citing apprehensions regarding sexual assaults, violence against women, and overall public safety.
Variety says the upcoming Hulu documentary will feature executive producers Jermaine Dupri and Uncle Luke. Moreover, the show will detail all of the excitement and hot debates that came with Freaknik in the 90s and beyond.
The streaming platform also announced that it’s releasing three new documentaries in the coming months. Two of them will focus on a notorious criminal mastermind, while the third will deconstruct the lives of some of the world’s most famous former child stars.
In the past year, Hulu has placed a strong emphasis on enriching its content with documentaries, unveiling groundbreaking titles such as “Captive Audience,” “Victoria Secret: Angels and Demons,” “God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down a Dynasty,” and “Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence.” Overseeing Hulu Originals’ documentary division are Senior Vice President of Documentaries and Unscripted Series Belisa Balaban, along with Vice President of Documentaries Beth Osisek.
