Meek Mill Leaves Roc Nation, Atlantic Records Due To Shady Contracts

With so many artists starting their own management companies, record labels are becoming a thing of the past. Meek Mill hasn’t officially gone the “independent artist” route yet, but he’s worked hard to establish himself as a self-made-man. He’s the proud owner of his very own record imprint, Dreamchasers, which he merged with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. However, it appears the partnership with Meek Mill is going bad.

Recent news broke that the “Going Bad” rapper left his joint record label Roc Nation and Atlantic Records. Apparently, Meek Mill walked away from overly shady contracts that have prevented him from releasing new music for several months. Even worse, his management team ruined his relationships with people in the industry. Now there’s bad blood between the artist and his former record label.

Meek Mill and Jay-Z have remained friends throughout the years. They’ve collaborated on various projects together and even started a non-profit organization to improve the treatment of prisoners. Though when it came to the business side of their relationship, things eventually went haywire. This week, Meek Mill walked away from Atlantic Records and Hov’s Roc Nation for good.

Recently, the “All Eyes On You” rapper took to Twitter to aim his frustration at both of his former record labels but particularly at Atlantic Records. The “1942 Flowers” rapper revealed that his contract prevented him from releasing new music after his most recent album, Expensive Pain. According to Meek Mill, he had to wait 9 months after the release of his album before dropping a new record. Additionally noted several times throughout his Twitter rant, Meek Mill made the record companies “100s of millions.” Meek Mill definitely felt slighted to say the least.

On top of having his rap career on hold, Atlantic Records tarnished Meek Mill’s friendships with other artists. In continuation of his Twitter rant, the Expensive Pain rapper shared that Atlantic Records tried to end his friendship with Roddy Rich. The Philly emcee explained that the moment Rich started raking in more money than him, Atlantic Records separated them. Despite all the bad blood that’s ensued between Meek Mill and Atlantic Records, he still maintains a good relationship with Hov’s Roc Nation.

Lately, Atlantic Records has lost several big name stars from their roster in the last few years, including Bhad Bhabie. Not to mention there’s a whole list of artists who’ve been burned by bad contracts! Hopefully, Meek Mill has better luck making music under Dreamchasers.
