In a significant step towards bolstering Ukraine’s depleted air force, the President of Poland has revealed plans to send 4 MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. This move underscores Poland’s commitment to aiding Ukraine in upgrading its military capabilities.
The MiG-29 Fulcrum stands as a modern fourth-generation supersonic fighter jet, comparable to the American F-16s.
Poland’s Contribution of MiG-29s
Poland is set to dispatch four MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine within the upcoming days, as announced by President Duda on March 9. This action not only solidifies Poland’s role in supporting Ukraine but also positions it as the first NATO member to provide the requested warplanes.
The MiG-29 is also capable of carrying underwing drop tanks and a centerline tank, with an option for radar-absorbing coatings.
Although the MiG-29s belong to the Polish Air Force, they are being replaced by more advanced American-made fighters. With a fleet of 28 MiG-29s, Poland is transitioning to KAI-made FA-50 multi-role jets and Lockheed Martin F-35s.
Ukraine’s MiG-29 Fleet
Ukraine possesses over 161 MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets, as per the Ukrainian Air Force data. These aircraft boast seven external hardpoints, accommodating R-27 and R-73 air-to-air missiles, a 30mm gun, and 150 rounds of ammunition.
