The NBA has announced some big news, and it involves Barack Obama.
The annual All-Star Weekend in Charlotte, NC just got alot more exciting. This weekend we’ll get to see the highest level of NBA talent compete against each other. With all the excitement surrounding the festivity-filled NBA break, it’s sure to be thrilling. However, Commissioner Adam Silva just released some shocking news.
Silver confirmed today that a Basketball Africa league will be started. The league will include 12-teams from around the continent. The launch will take place in 2020 and will feature teams from Angola, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Morocco, Nigeria, and Tunisia. Qualification tournaments will begin later on this year. Overall, each Country will be limited to two teams.
“As we’ve been talking about this concept over the last several months, there’s been a tremendous reception from several of our NBA team owners,” Silver said. “Several of our partners have also expressed an interest to work with us in Africa.”

Furthermore, the Basketball Africa League will be the NBA’s first pro league outside North America. Overall it will be co-run along with FIBA. Furthermore, the announcement became more interesting after Silva confirmed that Barack Obama would be apart of the initiative. Obama will have a significant role in the launch and organization.
“We’re excited to work closely with the NBA to develop and put in a place a professional league like none that we have ever seen in our region before,” FIBA Africa executive director Alphonse Bile said. “Through the Basketball Africa League, we can provide the many great clubs and players with the best possible environment to compete for the highest stakes.”
