    Copy-Cat: Ariana Grande’s 7 Rings Lawsuit

Ariana Grande is the defendant in a new lawsuit taken out on her hit song 7 RINGS. The smash-hit topped the No. 1 spot in the Billboard Hot 100 and is up for five Grammy nominations next week.

A federal complaint was filed in New York this morning, accusing Grande of copyright infringement.

The singer and Universal Music Corp. will face off against the Plaintiff, Josh Stone, a.k.a. ‘DOT’ (stage name).

DOT alleges that the catchy chorus in 7 RINGS too closely resembles his song ‘You Need It I Got It.’

Forensic musicologists analyzed both songs and determined that they are, in fact, oddly similar.

“Literally, every single one of the 39 respective notes of ‘7 Rings’ is identical with the 39 notes of ‘I Got It’ from a metrical placement perspective,” as stated in the suit.

Experts stated: “Each hook contains twelve words, with 7 RINGS drawing on nine identical words of [I GOT IT]”:

Grande’s “7 Rings”: “I Want It, I Got It. I Want It, I Got It”

Stone’s “You Need It, I Got It”: “You Need It, I Got It. You Want It, I Got It.”

The suit is alleging that one of the 12 co-defendants, Thomas Lee Brown, was present at meetings in 2017 with DOT where his song ‘You Need It, I Got It’ was played.

“This lawsuit is about protecting artists and their work. Josh’s song was taken and used without his consent, without his knowledge, and without a license,” DOT’s lawyer told Fox News.

“Many people made a LOT of money on Josh’s work. And that is wrong. It is copyright infringement. Laws were specifically created to protect artists like Josh from copyright infringement. Those laws were violated, and Josh has rights that we are now exercising to right that wrong,” he continued.

No defense party has yet to comment. It’ll be interesting to see how this news will affect Grande’s spot in the Grammy’s next week.

Lastly, does Ariana deserve major awards for her work? This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of her producing shady songs.
