A fatal stabbing at a Texas high school has sparked student protests and widespread online reaction after details of the incident circulated on social media.
On Dec. 17, a fight between two students inside a science classroom at Ross S. Sterling High School in Baytown, Texas, turned deadly. Authorities say 18-year-old student Aundre Matthews stabbed 16-year-old sophomore Andrew Meismer in the neck with a pair of classroom scissors.
Meismer was critically injured and transported by ambulance to Baytown Airport before being airlifted to a hospital in Houston’s Texas Medical Center. Weather conditions reportedly prevented a medical helicopter from landing on campus. He was pronounced dead at approximately 3:35 p.m., several hours after the incident occurred late that morning.
Matthews was taken into custody at the scene and initially held at the Baytown Municipal Jail. On Dec. 18, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted a murder charge against him. Authorities have not released a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Friends and family described Meismer as kind and humorous, someone who took pleasure in making others laugh. His girlfriend, Ikelle Fevrier, referred to him in a social media post as “my everything,” stating that his classmates deeply loved him.
The school was briefly placed on a “hold” following the incident before students were instructed to return to class — a response that drew criticism from students and parents. On Dec. 18, dozens of students, parents, and community members gathered outside the campus for a protest and memorial, holding signs that read “How many warnings is enough?” and “Justice for Andrew,” while calling for increased safety and accountability.
Some protesters alleged that Matthews had a prior history of disciplinary issues, though Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District or law enforcement officials have not confirmed those claims. Superintendent Dr. Randal O’Brien issued a statement expressing condolences to the Meismer family and noting that the incident involved only the two students.
The case drew national attention after an X (formerly Twitter) post. Replies to the post sparked broader debates around school violence and discipline, with Elon Musk responding with “!!,” further amplifying the post’s reach.
As of Dec. 19, Matthews remains charged with murder and is awaiting further court proceedings. The tragedy has prompted renewed discussion around school safety policies and violence prevention efforts in schools across the U.S.
