San Antonio Police Chief William LaHood Says It’s Legal to Pursue Someone Who’s Stolen a Vehicle

Earlier this week, a Texas man tracked down his stolen car using an Apple AirTag then shot and killed the person who stole it. Police are now investigating the incident and say it’s possible that the man who stole the truck may have had a weapon.

San Antonio Police Chief William LaHood says it’s legal for an officer to pursue someone who’s been accused of stealing property, as long as there is reasonable suspicion that the person may have a gun. He also said that it’s legal for Texans to carry a gun and use deadly force to defend themselves from apparent or imminent danger.

However, former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and one-time Democratic presidential candidate Joaquin Castro are calling on police to release body camera video of Ometu’s arrest. They say it’s a wrongful arrest and too common in America.

The Man Who Shot and Killed the Stolen Vehicle Suspect

Police say a Texas man tracked down a stolen car then shot and killed the person who stole it. He claims he did it in self-defense.

Earlier this week, a San Antonio man called 911 to report that his truck was missing from his northside home. Then he and two relatives tracked the stolen vehicle using Apple AirTags.

On Wednesday, March 29, the family spotted the truck in a parking lot on the southeast side of town. They got out of their truck and confronted the person inside it.

They saw a gun, the family member told SAPD officers. When he confronted the thief, he pulled out his own gun and fired it into the truck.

The alleged thief, who police said was a Hispanic male in his 30s, was later pronounced dead. It is unclear if the man who shot and killed him will face any charges.

The Truck’s Owners Shot and Killed the Stolen Vehicle Suspect

A man in Texas tracked down a stolen car then shot and killed the person who stole it, according to police. The owner of the truck used an Apple AirTag to track down the thief, then confronted him at a shopping center on the city’s southeast side, KHOU reports.

When he confronted the thief, who may have whipped out a gun, the truck’s owner shot him in the head, police said. Herrera died in the hospital, according to CBS News.

The incident teaches people not to pursue suspects on their own, police say. “If you are to get your vehicle stolen, I know that’s frustrating, but please do not take matters into your own hands like this,” San Antonio police public information officer Nick Soliz told reporters during a news briefing.
