After the Democrats took control of the house, Nancy Pelosi reclaimed her position as House Speaker too!
Pelosi had once served as speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011. There had never been a woman elected prior to her. Today she was sworn in once more, after receiving 220 votes from her colleagues. She beat out Kevin McCarthy for the position. This news comes about a week after Donald Trump declared shutting down the government if he can’t build a wall.
During her speech, Pelosi spoke of promise for the future.
“We have no illusions that our work will be easy and that all of us in this chamber will always agree, but let each of us pledge that when we disagree, we respect each other and we respect the truth,” she said.
Pelosi welcomed her grandchildren and other children on stage, as she made the speech. As speaker of the House, she vows to protect and strengthen the rights of every American citizen.
“When our new members take the oath, our Congress will be refreshed and our democracy will be strengthened by their optimism, idealism and patriotism of this transformative freshman class. Congratulations to all of you in the freshman class. Working together we will redeem the promise of the American dream for every family, advancing progress for every community,” she said.
