Carl Johann Grillmair, a veteran astrophysicist whose work helped confirm the presence of water vapor on distant planets, was shot and killed at his home in Llano, Calif., on Feb. 16. He was 67.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 6 a.m. at Grillmair’s residence in the rural Antelope Valley community. He was found on his front porch with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide.
Authorities arrested a 29-year-old suspect, Freddy Snyder, on Feb. 18. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has charged him with murder, as well as carjacking and burglary. He is being held on $2 million bail. Investigators have not announced a motive, and officials have said there is no indication the killing was connected to Grillmair’s scientific research.
Grillmair was a senior researcher at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology, where he spent decades studying the structure of the Milky Way and the atmospheres of planets beyond our solar system. Over the course of his career, he authored more than 200 scientific papers and earned an h-index of around 75, underscoring his impact in the field of astronomy.
He was perhaps best known for his work with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. In 2009, Grillmair and colleagues used infrared data from the observatory to confirm the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere of HD 209458b, a gas giant roughly 150 light-years from Earth. The finding marked one of the earliest definitive detections of water in an exoplanet’s atmosphere — a milestone in the growing effort to understand what distant worlds are made of.
While HD 209458b is a so-called “hot Jupiter” too extreme to support life as we know it, the discovery demonstrated that scientists could analyze the chemical fingerprints of planets orbiting other stars. That breakthrough laid critical groundwork for subsequent studies of worlds such as HD 189733b and K2-18b, where researchers have also reported evidence of water vapor in their atmospheres, further shaping the modern search for habitable environments beyond Earth.
Beyond exoplanets, Grillmair made significant contributions to mapping the Milky Way, including the discovery of giant stellar streams — elongated trails of stars believed to be remnants of smaller galaxies pulled apart by gravity. In recent years, he had also been researching near-Earth objects, including comets and asteroids that could pose potential hazards to Earth.
Colleagues at Caltech remembered Grillmair as both a meticulous researcher and a generous mentor whose work expanded humanity’s understanding of distant planetary systems. As the investigation continues, the astronomy community is mourning a scientist whose discoveries helped redefine how we look for water — and possibility — across the cosmos.
