The Not-So-Obvious:

Since the announcement this morning, everyone’s been quick to point out the big snubs, those who didn’t earn spots on the hotlist—and instead get to look from the outside.

Jennifer Lopez

Perhaps one of the biggest snubs this year, the film Hustlers and Lopez’s appearance in it, was left out altogether. An adaptation of a true story, 50-year-old Lopez plays the ringleader of a group of strippers with a case of sticky fingers. The real-life ringleader recently filed a lawsuit against the filmmakers for claims of defamation.

Robert De Niro

De Niro seemingly got the door shut in his face when his role for the Oscar-nominated film The Irishman didn’t receive a nomination from the Academy for best actor. De Niro already has two Oscars, so maybe he’ll sleep alright tonight.

Lupita Nyong’o

Much to our surprise, Nyong’o herself and Us received ZERO nominations! Perhaps one of the most talented new-age actresses of our day was snubbed by the Academy. Her role(s) in the Jordan Peele film shook us last spring when we saw her playing night and day on screen.

 Greta Gerwig

The Little Women director’s name surprisingly didn’t make an appearance this year on the Best Director list, nor did any other female director for that matter. Gerwig rose to recognition when her film ‘Ladybird’ gripped the heart of every teenage girl in 2018.

What do you think? Who was or wasn’t deserving of a spot on the hotlist? What were your favorite films in 2019?

Lastly, let us know in the comments!
