Kaylee Hottle, ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Star, Tragically Dies at 18 in Car Accident

Kaylee Hottle, the deaf actress who brought authenticity and heart to the role of Jia in Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla vs. Kong and its 2024 sequel, has died at the age of 18.

Hottle was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning (July 21) in Ijamsville, Maryland, her father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed. According to reports, the 18-year-old was a passenger in a 1995 Honda Accord that veered off the road at high speed and struck a culvert. She was pronounced dead en route to the hospital after her heart stopped. The driver, a 19-year-old man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the other passenger declined medical treatment. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation by local authorities.

A senior at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, Hottle came from a multi-generational deaf family — with four generations of deaf relatives on her father’s side — and was a passionate advocate for deaf representation both on and off screen. She was fluent in American Sign Language and used her platform to inspire others in the community.

Hottle made her feature film debut in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, earning widespread acclaim for her portrayal of the deaf orphaned girl who shares a special bond with the giant ape. She reprised the role in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), which earned her a Saturn Award nomination for Best Performance by a Younger Actor. Her other credits include a guest spot on Magnum P.I. and various commercials and advocacy projects.

Tributes quickly poured in from across the entertainment industry. Co-stars, including Millie Bobby Brown, as well as Legendary Pictures and prominent deaf actress Marlee Matlin, remembered Hottle’s talent, warmth and groundbreaking presence. Fans and members of the deaf community highlighted her as a role model who encouraged others to “speak up and follow your dreams.”

Her father shared the news via a Facebook livestream in ASL, while a GoFundMe has been launched to support the family. The Texas School for the Deaf also issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and offering support to Hottle’s loved ones.

Born on May 1, 2007, in Atlanta, Hottle was widely seen as a rising star whose work helped advance visibility for deaf actors in mainstream Hollywood blockbusters. At the time of her death, she had a film in pre-production.

Hottle’s passing marks a significant loss for the film industry and the deaf community. Family members have requested privacy as they grieve and plan a celebration of her life.
