Kanye West Sparks Outrage by Wearing Nazi T-Shirt in Latest Video

Kanye West is in the middle of courting another scandal. The provocative rapper, never afraid to push buttons, has gone and done so again, showing up in his recent clip wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a symbol of the Nazis. The outrageous and brazen gesture is sending shockwaves through his base, but is also inspiring outrage and indignation on and off of social media.

The video in contention was offered under a recent marketing blitz, in which West wore a shirt embroidered with a swastika, symbol inextricably linked to crimes of the Nazi regime. Wearing such an item is something that left everyone, including his fans and his enemies, wondering what his intent was. What was meant to be something artistic or edgy is instead something everyone saw as a gross miscalculation, referencing something dark in our history everyone feels never should have been made light of or referenced for shock.

Kanye’s latest scandal began in what seemed to have started in an innocent 15-second Super Bowl commercial. The commercial dealt with oral hygiene and directed viewers to his web address, Yeezy.com. But what viewers found afterwards left them in shock. On visiting the web address, viewers were greeted by photos of T-shirts with the symbol of the swastika.

The backlash against West and his team, however, was immediate and vociferous. The sponsoring ad agency for the ad, USIM, quickly ended their association with Yeezy LLC. And Shopify? Shopify closed up his store, alleging to have breached their terms of service.

In response to Kanye’s antics, an AI clip surfaced, presenting digital impersonations of over 20 Jewish celebrities, including Adam Sandler and Scarlett Johansson, criticizing his behavior. Produced by Israeli AI expert Ori Bejerano, the clip found them wearing middle finger and Star of David T-shirts, and sending a strong message: “Enough Is Enough.”

While the video’s intention was to call out antisemitism, it sparked a whole debate about the ethics of using AI to create content without permission.

Scarlett Johansson, who is included in the AI clip, did ensure to convey how upset she was to have her image used in such a context. Being against antisemitism, she did ensure to bring to light the point that AI’s misuse is such a massive threat.

“I also firmly believe AI multiplied by hate speech is an even larger threat than any given individual who is responsible for it,”

Declared Johansson, while calling for AI’s misuse to be regulated through law.

Other celebrities have jumped in. Kim Kardashian, criticizing but not directly mentioning West, decried antisemitism and stood in solidarity with the Jewish community. Jamie Lee Curtis, Reese Witherspoon, and Eric André urged Adidas to end their affiliation with West. Florence Pugh deplored a banner in support of West’s antisemitic views as “absolutely appalling” and Chelsea Handler urged the press to stop giving West oxygen to spread his views.

Adding another twist to the scandal, the T-shirt also featured code “HH-01” on them, allegedly in reference to “Heil Hitler.” The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) have deplored the shirts, describing them as another sign of West’s antisemitism.

Kanye’s recent antics have cost him dearly. Elon Musk suspended his account on X after a spate of concerning messages. 33 & West, his talent agency, severed their association. Shopify shut down his Yeezy store. And he’s even facing legal action by an ex-employee who says he sent them a “Hail Hitler” text.

It’s clear that Kanye West’s recent publicity grab has gone too far, and his antics have produced outrage and serious questions regarding freedom of expression and accountability thereto.
