Gilliam and Depp previously worked together on the films “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” (1998) and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” (2009).
At the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Gilliam gave some plot details. He disclosed that in the movie, God chooses to exterminate people because of their influence on Earth, his “beautiful garden.”
The only character who wishes to save humanity is Satan, played by Johnny Depp, who would go blind without them. Gilliam added humorously that the film is a comedy.

Gilliam also mentioned their previous collaborations, such as the 2002 documentary “Lost in La Mancha,” which followed his abortive attempt to finish a Don Quixote adaptation starring Johnny Depp.
He playfully mentioned that his name was listed above Depp’s in the credits, saying, “I have to keep him in his place.” The film, “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” was eventually released in 2018, starring Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce, a frequent collaborator of Gilliam’s.

Their partnership began with the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s “Fear and Loathing,” where Depp starred with Benicio del Toro. Gilliam recalled the filming of Thompson’s cameo as a challenging experience, as the author insisted on being the center of attention.

He believes that audiences are growing tired of traditional Hollywood storytelling structures. stating, “These three-act structural kind of things, people are sick of it.”
This statement was made after his defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, which concluded in June 2022.
Soon, Depp will feature in the animated picture “Johnny Puff: Secret Mission,” which is slated for release in 2024.
