Being famous affords a person certain luxuries that most people can only dream of. For Lil Uzi Vert, he can afford to purchase himself a planet. Canadian pop singer Grimes announced on Twitter that Lil Uzi Vert plans to buy the giant exoplanet WASP-127b. “Apparently @LILUZIVERT owns this planet—just a heads up,” Grimes tweeted with a link to a photo of the planet that researchers discovered back in 2016.

Furthermore, the rapper seemingly confirmed the news of his most eccentric purchase via Twitter as well. By the rapper sharing his fascination with space and technology, it’s not all that hard to believe. Not to mention, he’s produced several songs off his “Eternal Atake” album talking about outer space. The eccentric rapper loves everything space related.

While Vert’s pal Grimes is over the moon about his desire to purchase a planet, space experts aren’t buying the news. In fact, they argue that even if Vert did purchase the giant exoplanet, it wouldn’t be valid. There’s a slew of treaties and laws that prevent people from purchasing planets, despite their claims of owning a speck of the galaxy. For instance, the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, sponsored by the United Nations, forbids their citizens from owning territory in outer space.

Furthermore, director of McGill’s Institute of Air and Space Law, Ram Jakhu affirmed that the only way to achieve “planetary ownership” is by purchasing space minerals. Additionally, purchasing a planet would cost beyond trillions of dollars. Back in 2020, experts say that planet Earth ran for $5 quadrillion. Not even the biggest billionaire could afford that.
