Naturally, coming off an NBA championship the best players want to be compensated for their efforts. Golden State Warriors star PF Draymond Green expressed his frustration with the Warriors about not receiving the max. However, based on last season for the Warriors, this may not make the most sense. In order to keep the foundation of this Warriors team together, they will be forced to give up a key piece. Green’s always been outspoken, however, is it possible he could be hinting towards a departure from the Warriors?
It appears the Warriors don’t believe he’s worth what he’s asking for, reported Kyle Terada for USA Today. There’s no secret that the Warriors will have to be creative regarding keeping the unit together. They are coming off the most expensive team payroll in NBA history and somehow they have to try to make guys like Draymond Green happy. The Warriors are battling between several different extensions. Ultimately, forcing the Warriors to prioritize their spending. Sadly, compared to the other key players looking for extensions, Green may not be at the top of the list.
Green’s proven to be vital to the Warrior’s success and deserves to be compensated. However, what he’s asking, may be unrealistic. As of now, Green is in the final season of his current contract. He’s eligible for a max contract extension. When they come to an agreement by early August he’ll be tied down to the Warriors for the next five seasons. Therefore, he’d finish his wonderful career in the Bay area.
Draymond Green’s Future
Many believe that based on his career and accomplishments he’s content with his accolades and not chasing much. Therefore, many believe he’s willing to shop elsewhere and get the money he believes he deserves. According to Marcus Thompson for The Athletic, he’s expecting $164.2 million in his extension.
According to Thompson’s report, Green wants to stay with the Warriors, but he is open to considering other options to secure the contract he desires. Warriors’ management seems willing to take the risk, as Green enters the season determined to prove himself deserving of a max contract, which could positively impact his performance on the court.
