Officer 2 injured

Mesa police say one of the officers hurt following a fight with a man at dutch bros in Mesa was required to have surgery. The suspect, Tegan Williams, 21, grabbed and squeezed the officer’s hand so tight that it broke and will require surgery to repair.

The incident was caused when a disturbance call led to a physical fight between officers and the man, police said. A taser deployed to ward off the man did not connect and police say he pulled out his gun as the officers were attempting to use a less-lethal weapon.

This incident was recorded on body worn cameras and is now being released in conjunction with a Critical Incident Briefing to the local media, but not without some redactions of personal identifying information. Determinations regarding the alignment of the officers’ actions with departmental policy and the law will be withheld until a comprehensive understanding of all facts is achieved.

The 21-year-old was arrested on multiple charges including aggravated assault, resisting arrest and criminal damage, authorities said. Currently detained under a $100,000 bond, Williams’ grip on one of the officers’ hands, as depicted in the body camera footage, was so forceful that it resulted in a fracture, according to the statement. He also kicked another officer “who was seen to be unconscious.” A third officer required a medical evaluation and an X-ray on his hand.

They were taking L’s left and right

Three police officers were hurt following a fight with a man at Dutch Bros in Mesa Arizona on Saturday morning. Officers were called to the coffee shop near Power and Ray roads after receiving a call that a disturbed person was verbally abusing staff.

According to Mesa police, the man left before the officers arrived but came back and confronted them in a hostile manner. That’s when a stun gun was deployed.

Despite the stun gun’s attempt, it failed to subdue the individual, leading to a physical altercation between the man and the officers, as reported by the police. Eventually, the man drew a firearm on one of the officers, prompting the officer to discharge his handgun.

The ongoing inquiry into this incident will encompass an internal assessment by the Professional Standard Bureau, along with a criminal investigation. Conclusive determinations regarding the officers’ actions in alignment with departmental policy and the law will be withheld until all details are clarified and the investigation concludes.
