Gen. Michael Flynn was recently pardoned by President Trump after pleading guilty of lying to FBI investigators during an investigation of whether President Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia. Flynn then made an unprecedented request. He asked that the Constitution be suspended, martial law be imposed, and the presidential election re-run.
Flynn re-tweeted a tweet from We the People, a fringe political group, on 1 December. “Freedom never kneels, except for God,” he wrote, tagging several conservative reporters and lawyers. “When the legislators, courts and/or Congress fail to do their duty under the 12th Amendment, you must be ready Mr President to immediately declare a limited form of Martial Law, and temporarily suspend the Constitution and civilian control of these federal elections, for the sole purpose of having the military oversee a national re-vote,” We the People wrote in the tweet.
The call was not met with universal acclaim. “You’re a real piece of shit, and a stain on the entire military,” one person wrote. “Don’t you remember swearing an oath to “Preserve, protect and defend The Constitution of The United States”? How does suspending The Constitution fulfill that oath? Your Stars and pension should be revoked because this is absolutely disgusting for a 3-Star Lt. General,” wrote another.
While the Military Times reports that White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany called Flynn “a valiant hero who served his country both on the battlefield and then in government”, the White House has not commented on Flynn’s request.
