Pug Seizure Fundraiser Surpasses $160K Goal in Under a Week

A popular pug with a massive social media following has become the subject of one of GoFundMe’s largest animal fundraisers of 2026 after a sudden and serious health scare.

King Chilli, known for his chaotic and beloved videos on TikTok under the handle @kingchillithepug (which has approximately 1.5 million followers), suffered a severe seizure episode in mid-May. The incident quickly escalated into status epilepticus, a prolonged and life-threatening seizure condition, prompting his owners, Oliver and Helena Cutts of Leeds, U.K., to launch a crowdfunding campaign.

As of May 21, the “Help Save King Chilli” GoFundMe has raised more than $160,000 (roughly £124,000), surpassing its original £125,000 target in just over a week.

Chilli was rushed to emergency veterinary care after the initial seizure on or around May 13. His body temperature spiked to a dangerous 41°C (105.8°F) en route, and vets placed him in an induced coma to manage the seizures and protect his brain. After attempts to reduce sedation led to further episodes, he was transferred to a specialist neurology hospital for advanced diagnostics, including MRI scans.

Medical teams have been treating suspected brain inflammation with steroids, anti-seizure medications, and chemotherapy-style immunosuppressant drugs. The pug has also required care for secondary issues, including a corneal ulcer in one eye and a wound on his left paw. Recent updates indicate encouraging progress: Chilli is more alert, eating well, maintaining normal temperature, and has shown no additional seizures, though he continues physical therapy to regain mobility and strength.

The high fundraising goal reflects the significant long-term costs ahead. Pet insurance covered only initial emergency bills, which have since been exhausted. Ongoing care — including immunosuppressant treatments estimated at £9,000–£10,000 annually and total yearly expenses potentially reaching £18,000–£30,000 or more — could include lifelong medication, specialist monitoring, and possible future hospitalizations. The family owns a pack of six dogs, all around 6–7 years old, which has added to veterinary and insurance pressures.

Update on Chilli We had another call with the specialist neurology team today, and we’re still trying to take it in. Chilli is conscious. Two days ago, we were told that in his condition, it would be a minor miracle if he became conscious again. After the seizures, the induced coma, oxygen support, MRI, brain swelling, and multiple general anaesthetics, hearing that he is awake feels impossible to believe. He also ate twice this morning, which honestly floored us. After everything his little body and brain have been through, that felt huge. He is off sedation and some of the infusions he was on, but he remains in ICU and this is still extremely early days. The vet was clear that Chilli is not out of the woods yet. He is still very unwell, restless, paddling, and trying to walk constantly while his brain and body recover. He is being settled by a personal nurse because he becomes very unsettled when left alone, which somehow still feels very Chilli. We still cannot visit because he needs to stay calm, but the team kindly sent us a video so we could see him, and we’ve watched it countless times today. The steroids appear to be helping reduce the inflammation in his brain. Some anti-seizure medication is being moved from injections to tablets, and he is starting chemotherapy drugs as part of his immunosuppressant treatment. The first three days are critical, and the first three weeks are critical too. We have been told there is a likely relapse risk of around 40%, and that some dogs with this condition continue to have seizures monthly or even weekly. We are hoping with everything we have that he can pull through another night, and praying we see more small improvements over the coming days. If tonight goes well, we have another call with the specialist tomorrow to talk through the next steps. None of this would have been possible without your support. You helped give him access to the specialist care, emergency treatment, and time he needed to reach this moment. Saying thank you will never be enough, but thank you. From both of us, from the bottom of our hearts #Kingchillithepug

In the fundraiser description, Oliver Cutts emphasized that donations were not expected and should only come from those who have enjoyed Chilli’s content over the years. The family also noted irregular income from their social media presence and recent medical needs for their other dogs.

King Chilli’s large online community has driven the rapid support, with fans sharing updates across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. The story highlights the deep emotional connections many have with viral pet personalities and the high costs of advanced veterinary care.

Chilli remains under hospital care with a guarded but improving prognosis. A roughly 40% risk of relapse has been noted, meaning the pug may require ongoing management for the foreseeable future.
