Porto police has continued to confirm that a 59-year-old man died after his girlfriend fell on top of him at their family home in Campanhã, a residential and city-centrally-located neighborhood. The incident occurred in the morning of the date August 11, 2025, and has been legally classified a case of accidental asphyxia. The law and order forces have ruled out foul play.
From the regional newspaper Jornal de Notícias and the PSP (Public Security Police), the man was lying on the floor between the wall and the bed when his 60-year-old partner reportedly tripped getting out of bed. She fell across him and because the room was small, none of them could move.
“We understand this was a rare and deeply tragic accident,”
A PSP spokesperson said.
“There is no indication of any criminal intent.”
The woman tried to break free but couldn’t because she got stuck between the furniture and her boyfriend. Both of them began screaming for help and woke up neighbors, who rushed to the scene. Witnesses said it took a team of five men to free the woman from her boyfriend.

Responders of paramedics and firefighters arrived shortly afterwards. By that point the man had been unconscious and in cardiac arrest. After numerous attempts at reviving him, he was declared dead at the scene.

“It broke my heart. We did everything in our power, but it all went so quickly.”
