More artists need to pay attention to how Lil Durk made it to the top of the rap game. Many people have this misconception that he came out of nowhere, which is far from the truth. He was a part of the 2014 XXL Freshman List and didn’t really start blowing up til 2020. Lil Durk’s worth started to grow. He could’ve easily given up in those six years, but he kept tweaking his sound and perfecting his craft.
Stayed the Course
A lot of people credit his success to being featured on Drake’s 2020 smash “Laugh Now Cry Later”. As good as the song was, I think this moment was more so the icing on the cake of his success. Lil Durk’s worth was cemented. How many artists do you hear about receiving the Toronto Stimulus Package, and their careers still don’t go anywhere? Whatever happened to ILoveMakonnen or BloccBoyJB? If you don’t do anything once you get the opportunity, it’s meaningless, but Durk is different.
Ever since the death of rapper King Von, I feel like Durk has kept his foot on the pedal. Release after release, he shows how he earned his nickname “The Voice”. His music speaks to the average person because they can relate to his painful experiences. The fans love him because he always wears his emotions on his sleeve.
Refusing to Slow Down
Once again, Durkio has fed the streets with even more heat, with the deluxe version of 7220 recently dropping. This album is just full of bangers, where he calls upon features from the industry’s elite, just to massacre them. Listening to the way he utilizes auto-tune feels like an out-of-body experience.
Out of all Lil Durk’s 7220 tracks, my favorite was “Hear It Back”, featuring MoneybaggYo. Moneybagg is easily one of the most consistent artists in the game, and he’s guaranteed to pop his shit on every song.
As I said earlier, Durk is a perfect example of how you should move as an artist. The Chicago rapper was patient and waited for his moment, and hasn’t looked back since. Lil Durk’s worth surely matches his relentless grind.
