James Howells Bitcoin: Why He Quit His $950M Landfill Quest

A fortune worth $950 million lies buried in a Welsh landfill, and after a 12-year relentless pursuit, James Howells has called it quits. The story of the James Howells Bitcoin saga began in 2013, when the computer engineer accidentally tossed a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoin into the Docksway landfill in Newport, Wales. It’s a mistake that haunts him, with projections suggesting the lost cryptocurrency could be worth $8 billion by 2030.

Howells mined the 8,000 Bitcoin back in 2009 when the currency was a niche experiment. By 2013, the hard drive holding the private key was mistakenly discarded during an office clear-out. Even then, the coins were worth a significant sum. Today, that lost stash is valued at approximately $950 million, a figure that has fueled his long-running campaign for its recovery.

Howells refused to give up. He spent years lobbying to recover the hard drive, proposing high-tech solutions involving AI-powered drones and robotic arms to sift through the landfill’s waste. He even offered Newport City Council and local charities 30% of the fortune for excavation rights. The council, however, repeatedly blocked his plans, citing environmental risks and prohibitive costs for the site, which is slated to become a solar farm after its 2026 closure.

The battle escalated in December 2024 when Howells sued the council for $647 million, demanding access or compensation. A High Court judge dismissed the case in January 2025, ruling it lacked merit. After plans to buy the landfill with backing from hedge funds also stalled, Howells announced a bold pivot: he will tokenize the lost Bitcoin into a new cryptocurrency. The new asset, Ceiniog Coin (INI), is set to launch in late 2025 and aims to bypass the need for physical recovery.

The James Howells Bitcoin saga has captured global attention, inspiring a documentary titled The Buried Bitcoin: The Real-Life Treasure Hunt of James Howells, slated for release later this year. The film will reportedly use CGI to recreate his journey, from the initial loss to his extensive legal and technological recovery efforts. Howells hopes the film will highlight his struggle and build support for his tokenization plan.

For now, Howells has stepped away from the physical search, declaring he is “done asking permission.” The hard drive remains buried, a symbol of both a staggering loss and the volatile potential of cryptocurrency. Fortunes can vanish in an instant or, as seen when an $8.69B Bitcoin wallet suddenly came alive after 14 years of silence, reappear just as unexpectedly.
