Elon Musk is touting his new AI-powered encyclopedia, Grokipedia, as a game-changing alternative to Wikipedia — even as researchers raise concerns about the platform’s sourcing, reliability, and political neutrality.
In a recently shared video clip, the xAI founder praised the project, calling it a significant leap forward in how users will access information.
“Grokipedia will succeed, I think it’s fundamentally a superior product to Wikipedia,” Musk said. “It is a better source of information, and we haven’t even added images and video yet.”
Grokipedia launched on Oct. 27, 2025, as an open-source encyclopedia built using the company’s latest Grok AI model. Musk said the platform will eventually include video and image features to improve the experience.
He added that users familiar with a topic will immediately notice the difference.
“When you read a Grokipedia article about a subject or a person that you know a lot about, and you see, ‘Wow, this is way better than Wikipedia. It’s more comprehensive, it’s way more accurate, it’s neutral instead of biased,’ … then you’re gonna forward those links around,” Musk said. “This is actually the better source.”
Musk later repeated his confidence in the project. “Grokipedia will succeed, I think very well, because it is fundamentally a superior product to Wikipedia,” he said. “And we haven’t even added images and video yet.”
He also claimed the platform holds more detailed entries than competing sites. “We used the latest version of Grok to create Grokipedia, which I think is not just more neutral and more accurate than Wikipedia, but actually has a lot more information,” Musk said.
While Musk has positioned Grokipedia as more accurate and balanced than Wikipedia, independent reviews reveal a more complex picture.
At launch, the site offered more than 885,000 AI-generated articles — roughly 11% of Wikipedia’s nearly 8 million entries. Many pages included a “Fact-checked by Grok” label, but researchers note that xAI has not publicly released its fact-checking standards or methods.
NBC News also reported that Grokipedia cited the extremist website Stormfront 42 times, prompting criticism about the platform’s sourcing.
Additional studies found that Grokipedia pages were:
- More likely to cite “questionable” or blacklisted sources
- Less transparent about references than Wikipedia
- Vulnerable to AI-generated inaccuracies, including false historical claims
- Sometimes closely adapted from Wikipedia despite positioning itself as a new alternative
Even Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger reviewed his own Grokipedia entry and said it mixed accurate material with what he described as “bullshittery.”
Though Musk has emphasized neutrality, early reviews from journalists and researchers found that several entries promoted right-leaning talking points, including claims about transgender identities and misleading information about the AIDS epidemic.
Some pages about controversial historical figures were also criticized for minimizing key context. An entry about Adolf Hitler, for example, was noted for highlighting economic developments over the atrocities of the Holocaust.
Articles about Musk and his companies also appeared to align closely with his own public stances. One detail absent from his Grokipedia entry — but included on Wikipedia — was a highly publicized hand gesture he made in early 2025.
Experts say one of the most significant challenges is the lack of clarity around how the platform verifies information.
The Wikimedia Foundation’s chief product and technology officer said that, unlike Wikipedia’s open editing system — which allows anyone to review sources, discuss edits, and track changes — Grokipedia relies on a closed AI process with no visible documentation of how claims are evaluated.
Researchers described the system’s underlying bias as structural and opaque, shaped by xAI’s internal choices rather than a public community.
Despite Musk’s emphasis on future upgrades, Grokipedia remained a text-only platform as of mid-November 2025. Images and video capabilities — which Musk has promoted as key improvements over Wikipedia — have not yet rolled out.
Musk has stated that Grokipedia’s next major version will be “10X better” than the current one, and he continues to describe the platform as a significant improvement over existing encyclopedias. But experts say the platform’s credibility will depend on whether future versions address concerns around sourcing, transparency, and algorithmic accuracy.
For now, researchers say Grokipedia shows promise — but caution that many of Musk’s most significant claims remain unproven.
