Georgia Police Say Twin Brothers Found Dead in Mountains Died by Double Suicide

The tragic deaths of twin brothers Qaadir and Naazir Lewis, found lifeless atop a remote Georgia mountain, have been ruled a double suicide, leaving their family and community grappling with unanswered questions. On March 8, 2025, hikers discovered the 19-year-old brothers from Lawrenceville on Bell Mountain in Hiawassee, about 90 miles from their home. Initially, police suspected a murder-suicide, but a recent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) concluded that both brothers took their own lives.

The GBI’s findings, announced on May 21, 2025, point to compelling evidence. Forensic analysis revealed that both Qaadir and Naazir fired guns, suggesting self-inflicted wounds. Cellphone data further supported this, showing the twins were alone from their home to the mountain, with no one else involved. Investigators also uncovered internet searches on their phones about suicide rates and how to load a gun. Days before, Naazir had purchased ammunition, which was delivered to their home, aligning with the timeline of their deaths.

Yet, the ruling has sparked disbelief among the twins’ family. They describe Qaadir and Naazir as inseparable, with no history of depression or conflict. The brothers had big plans, including a cruise for their 20th birthdays in April 2025 and Qaadir’s dream of studying aviation maintenance. Their aunt, Samira Brawner, insists the twins would never harm themselves or each other, questioning how they accessed the locked park gate at Bell Mountain, which is closed from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. The family’s doubts have fueled their push for answers, leading them to launch a GoFundMe campaign to fund funeral costs and hire a private investigator.

The twins’ journey to Bell Mountain, a place they had never visited, adds to the mystery. They missed a flight to Boston the day before their deaths, carrying plane tickets that hinted at other plans. On April 27, 2025, family members retraced their steps to the mountain, finding the remote location out of character for the twins, who weren’t known for hiking. Despite the police’s conclusion, the family continues to seek clarity, even celebrating the twins’ 20th birthdays posthumously with plans for a memorial cruise.

The GBI says the investigation will close soon, but the family’s quest for truth persists. They’ve shared their grief and skepticism on social media, urging others to remember Qaadir and Naazir for their vibrant lives, not their tragic end. As the community mourns, the case raises broader questions about mental health and the need for thorough investigations in unexpected tragedies.
