A Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputy is under fire after a shocking incident involving a young boy on a bicycle. A viral video shows the deputy nearly hitting the child with an unmarked SUV before forcefully tackling him to the ground. The encounter, which took place around 3 p.m. on April 1, 2025, has sparked widespread public outcry and debate.
It happened at Deerfield Beach where BSO deputies were pursuing a group of teenagers suspected of reckless riding. The deputy, driving an unmarked black Chevy SUV, pulled up beside the boy on the red bicycle and then grabbed his shirt and slammed him onto the ground. On the video, the boy can be heard screaming, “Stop! Stop! Stop!” as he is pinned by the deputy.
Soon, several patrol vehicles marked from the BSO arrived on the scene, their sirens illuminating the mayhem. Witnesses videotaped the incident and immediately uploaded the video on social media pages including “Only in Broward” and “Only in Palm Beach.” The video was viewed millions of times and sparked heated discussion on social media ever since.
Public reaction to the video was dramatic. Some believe the deputy overreacted, particularly as the boy was unarmed and much smaller than the deputy. Others support the deputy’s response as being needed to protect people from irresponsible cycling.
Personal injury attorney George Palaidis was one of those who strongly criticized the officer’s actions as “an unwarranted use of force that may have caused severe injury or worse.” He compared it to “using lethal force against a child” and this further fueled the outrage.
According to BSO, the deputy was part of an operation to target dangerous cycling behavior among local children. Officers had been following groups of children suspected of running red lights, ignoring traffic signals, and riding without helmets. After the confrontation, the boy was taken into custody and taken to a local hospital to be examined. Fortunately, he did not incur serious injuries and was then released on a Juvenile Civil Citation. The deputy and boy’s name and age are not being made public by the BSO.
