“Diddy” Combs is once again in the hot seat. This time, it comes via Dawn Richard, a former contestant on MTV’s “Making the Band” and a longtime member of his music groups. Richard has filed a lawsuit against Combs in Manhattan federal court, alleging harassment and assault throughout her years working with the hip-hop mogul.
On September 11, 2024, Richard filed a lawsuit claiming she was subjected to a course of abuse and violence during her time at Bad Boy Records between 2004 and 2011 by Diddy. The revelation further added to many legal troubles the hip-hop icon had been facing.
She claims Diddy manipulated her into believing ‘suffering was some sort of right of passage’ for female artists. “Abuse and exploitation were necessary to ensure female artists succeeded in music,” her lawyers say. This is the reality many women go through inside the entertainment world, and Richard is adding her voice to the chorus of females who have come up with similar stories.
Richard’s suit puts his worst behaviors in lurid detail. She said the grueling rehearsal schedules would sometimes last as long as 48 hours without sleep, leading to weight loss and dehydration. In a disturbing incident, she claimed he entered her dressing room while she was naked and fondled her. Another claimed that when first she visited him at his Miami mansion, Diddy greeted her in nothing but his underwear, ignoring her request to get dressed.
The list of the allegations does not stop with Richard’s personal experiences. She alleges she once witnessed Diddy physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie, along with his late partner Kim Porter. Richard once reminisced about how, in 2005, she saw Porter leaving a studio with visible bruises.
In 2009, she says that she had seen Diddy, in some drug-induced frenzy, hurl Cassie against a wall, choking her and dragging her up the stairs of his residence. Richard recalls one particularly outrageous incident of Diddy hurling a pan full of eggs at Cassie and yelling at her in frustration, saying “I can’t stand you, b**ch. You never do it right!” These accounts reveal something staggering about Diddy’s nature behind closed doors.
With these, Richard and her band member Kaleena Harper are said to have encouraged Cassie to leave Diddy. But when Diddy finds this out, he confronts the women, warning them to stay out of his relationship. “Y’all b**ches don’t get in my relationship,” he allegedly told them, threatening their careers if they continued to interfere.
Dawn Richard’s lawsuit against Sean Combs, better known as Diddy, is coming at a time when Diddy already is entangled in various legal issues. Recently this year alone, he was ordered to pay $100 million to a Michigan inmate after he accused Diddy of drugging him and raping him at a party in 1997. Diddy did not show up for the hearing, leading to a default judgment against him.
This year, the 50-year-old Diddy has faced a constant barrage of legal problems, the least of which are at least eight civil lawsuits charging sexual abuse, including the cases by ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, who gained sympathy when a disturbing video of Diddy beating her surfaced. The charges have been denied by Diddy.
In May, he apologized for all that was recorded in that video. Richard first crossed paths with Diddy when she was selected for the third season of “Making the Band,” a reality show that set out to create the next big music group. She won the season and joined Danity Kane, which was Diddy’s girl group that reached fame during the late 2000s. But Richard claims her time inside the Diddy universe had high personal costs: “It was a culture of neglect, where we weren’t allowed food or sleep.”.
In the suit, Richard outlines his claims of harassment and assault, purportedly including being groped during fitting sessions while a member of another group, Diddy – Dirty Money.
Richard also details harrowing incidents involving Diddy and other young women. Probably the most alarming incident was in Atlanta in 2009. Richard claims Diddy orchestrated the bringing in of young women, some looking underage. According to her lawyers, most of the women looked to be incapacitated while Diddy and others were “engaged in sexual acts.”.
Richard’s claims go beyond what happened to her. She says she witnessed Diddy abusing his former partners, naming his ex-wife, Kim Porter, and Ventura. She recalls seeing Ventura walk out of the studio in tears with visible bruises. The allegations paint a relatively grim picture of a man who allegedly exercised power for harm.
Richard is accusing Diddy of numerous grave offenses in the lawsuit, including violation of New York City’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Act and California’s Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act, on station grounds of assault, sexual battery, false imprisonment, and emotional distress. The lawsuit also will include intellectual property claims against Diddy’s infringing on the copyrights of her music.
As the trial goes on, it brings to mind once again the whole talk of abuse and accountability that surrounds the music industry. The #MeToo movement gives a voice to many women who can now speak about it, and Richard adding himself to this narrative adds another layer to a very critical conversation.
Diddy‘s team has yet to respond to the latest suit, so it’s anyone’s guess how this will play out. In a world where music and fame tend to drown out personal tribulations, voices like Dawn Richard go a long way in highlighting the problems at the backend.
