Prominent Atlanta defense attorney Brian Steel just dropped a pro hac vice motion to jump on rapper Lil Durk’s federal murder-for-hire case. The paperwork hit the U.S. District Court for Central District of Californiaunder Case No. 2:24-cr-00621-MWF. Steel is looking to replace Chicago lawyer Jonathan M. Brayman on the defense roster, but he still needs the federal judge to sign off before it’s official.
For anyone not up on court lingo, pro hac vice is basically the standard way an out-of-state attorney gets permission to handle one specific case in another jurisdiction. Once the judge green-lights it, Steel can file motions, cross-examine witnesses, and sit right at the defense table in downtown Los Angeles federal court.
Durk Banks better known as Lil Durk has been sitting in federal custody since his arrest back in October 2024. Prosecutors claim the Chicago drill star and Only The Family boss put a bounty on rival Quando Rondo somewhere between $100,000 and a full million dollars. They say it was straight payback for the 2020 murder of King Von. The alleged hit went down in August 2022 near the Beverly Center in L.A.: shots missed Quando Rondo but killed his 24-year-old cousin Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson. Durk pleaded not guilty and is now staring down conspiracy-to-commit-murder-for-hire charges plus firearms counts that each carry the possibility of life in prison.

Steel didn’t exactly wake up famous he earned every bit of his rep the hard way. For over two years he battled alongside Young Thug through that marathon YSL RICO trial in Atlanta, firing off aggressive motions that forced prosecutors to cough up evidence left and right. The case dragged on so long it became the longest criminal trial in Georgia history before it finally ended in a plea deal. Along the way Steel even caught a quick contempt citation that Georgia’s Supreme Court later threw out on appeal. More recently he signed on to help Sean “Diddy” Combs beat the feds in New York. Young Thug straight-up called Steel “my brother” and offered to foot the bill for Durk’s defense, but Steel reportedly turned the money down so he could stay laser-focused on the work.
Durk’s current team already features heavy-hitter Atlanta attorney Drew Findling. Bringing in Steel adds serious muscle against more than 30,000 pages of discovery and a stack of conspiracy charges. The guy has a proven knack for shredding complex gang-related cases and hammering prosecutors on evidence issues. That kind of firepower could shift the whole momentum, especially after multiple $5 million bail requests got shot down.
The second the filing hit the docket, social media exploded. Fans flooded X and Instagram calling Steel’s addition a straight-up “game-changer.” A lot of them are already betting his track record is going to tilt the scales in Durk’s favor.
Of course the judge still has to approve the pro hac vice request before Steel can officially step in. Durk’s trial date already pushed back several times because of the insane volume of evidence and co-defendant filings is now tentatively staring down an August 2026 start. Pretrial hearings keep rolling while the defense keeps pounding away at dismissal motions and evidence fights. For now Lil Durk remains locked up, but his legal squad just got a whole lot stronger.
