The air around the U.S. District Court in Manhattan buzzed with excitement. When defense lawyers Brian Steel and Nicole Westmoreland emerged, cheers erupted from fans of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. The hip-hop giant had just been given a divided verdict after a highly charged federal trial that captivated the nation.
“Thank you all for being here and writing truthfully about a man wrongly charged with most of the crimes,”
Steel told the press outside, surrounded by his team and supporters.
“We must remember that allegations are nothing.”
A federal jury acquitted Combs after two months of testimony and three days of deliberation of the most severe charges: racketeering conspiracy and two counts of sex trafficking by force or fraud. But they convicted him on two counts under the Mann Act an early 20th-century law against interstate transport for prostitution. Both counts have a maximum sentence of 10 years, and Combs will be held in custody until his October 3rd sentencing in 2025.
Steel praised Combs’ bravery in taking the case to trial.
“He actually battled for his freedom, for his innocence. And he did it,”
he said.
“We’re so happy that he did. We’re proud of him.”
Judge Arun Subramanian rejected the application by Combs for bail after observing a “pattern of violence.” The prosecutors had pointed out the threat that he posed to the witnesses, particularly Cassie Ventura, the ex-girlfriend whose civil case sparked the federal trial.
Combs, once head of the giant music and fashion empire, was charged with staging drug-fueled “freak-off” parties that frequently included coercion and abuse. Ventura and another accuser, “Jane,” testified emotionally, with the defense responding with texts that implied consent, such as the infamous “I’m always ready” text sent by Ventura.
The trial in the Southern District of New York from May 5 through July 2 held the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia not just with its celebrity spectacle but with the larger questions it raised about justice, consent, and narrative framing.
Steel, best known for his fiery courtroom presence in Georgia’s YSL RICO trial (representing rapper Young Thug), was brought into Combs’ team in April. His counterpart, Nicole Westmoreland also part of the YSL legal dream team drew added public attention as both a survivor of sexual assault and a seasoned defense attorney.
Though she didn’t speak publicly after the verdict, her presence did not go unnoticed. X posts captured fans applauding her as she exited the courthouse with Steel. Legal analyst Meghann Cuniff posted a video showing the pair’s emotional moment, captioning it:
“Another win for Brian Steel. Westmoreland’s strength radiates.”
Their synergy developed during the YSL case proved vital.
“There’s not a better group of honest and ethical, hard-working and zealous lawyers,”
Steel said, singling out Westmoreland and others for their commitment.

The scene outside was a reflection of the country’s mood split. Supporters waved signs proclaiming “Justice for Diddy,” while others decried the acquittals.
Social platforms lit up. One post read,
“The jury let another one off. Violence was admitted, and it wasn’t enough?”
Another defended the outcome:
“The system worked. They couldn’t prove the worst stuff. Innocent until proven guilty still matters.”
Steel and Westmoreland’s roles in both the YSL and Combs cases also point to a new wave of high-profile defense attorneys becoming cultural figures. Steel was recently profiled in GQ, featured in a Drake song, and even modeled for Young Thug’s fashion brand.
With sentencing just three months away, Combs remains at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. The court could still revise his custody status, but concerns about intimidation may keep him behind bars.
Steel and Westmoreland will continue to steer the defense, possibly filing for an appeal depending on the sentence. Meanwhile, the entertainment world watches closely. Though Combs avoided the harshest legal penalties, his reputation may not recover.
