Lil Durk Appears Slimmer in Jail Hearing, Remains in Good Spirits

Lil Durk’s federal murder-for-hire case will not go to trial this month as planned.

The Chicago rapper, born Durk Devontay Banks, appeared in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Jan. 7, where a judge postponed his trial until at least late April 2026. The delay comes more than a year after Durk was arrested in October 2024 and amid growing scrutiny of his pretrial detention conditions.

Durk has pleaded not guilty to federal charges alleging he orchestrated a murder-for-hire plot connected to a 2022 shooting at a Los Angeles gas station. Prosecutors claim the attack targeted rival rapper Quando Rondo in retaliation for the 2020 killing of King Von, Durk’s close friend and Only the Family (OTF) associate. Quando Rondo survived the shooting, but his cousin, Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, was killed.

Durk and five alleged OTF affiliates face charges including conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death, which carries a mandatory life sentence if convicted, along with firearm and interstate commerce offenses. Prosecutors say the case includes extensive evidence, including surveillance footage, audio recordings, tens of thousands of pages of documents, and testimony from cooperating witnesses.

The Jan. 7 hearing was tied to a trial date previously set for Jan. 20. Several co-defendants, joined by prosecutors, requested a continuance, citing the complexity of the case and the sheer volume of discovery materials. The judge granted the request, indicating the trial could begin as early as April 21 or April 28, with early May also under consideration. Durk and his attorneys opposed the delay, arguing he has consistently sought a speedy trial after spending more than 14 months in custody.

Observers in the courtroom noted that Durk appeared noticeably slimmer but remained upbeat, smiling as he entered the courtroom and acknowledging his wife, India Royale, who was seated in the gallery. Photos from the hearing circulated widely online, drawing attention to his demeanor despite reported weight loss during detention.

Durk’s legal team also raised concerns about his confinement at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. According to his attorneys, Durk has been held in the facility’s Segregated Housing Unit since Aug. 29, 2025 — more than four months — following an alleged contraband violation. They say he is confined to his cell for 23 hours a day, has limited phone access, no commissary privileges, and no in-person visits.

Defense lawyers argued the placement lacks due process and may violate constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment, citing research linking prolonged solitary confinement to serious mental health risks. The judge scheduled a separate hearing in February to address the issue.

Public reaction to the hearing has been swift, with fans voicing support for Durk across social media and criticizing the use of extended solitary confinement for pretrial detainees. As the case moves toward a delayed trial date, it remains one of the most closely watched legal battles involving a major figure in hip-hop.
