HYPEFRESH: Could you tell us how it all began? What encouraged you to start playing and making music?
Karlie Cupani: Singing and writing music is the one thing that always came effortlessly and stayed consistent for me. Over the years, I’ve found myself making time for music. I would sing into my karaoke machine almost every night when I was younger. Then as I got older and started exploring the world, my surroundings and experiences opened up a new chapter and way of writing.
HYPEFRESH: Talk me through your creative process when you write new music.
Karlie Cupani: My approach to writing music starts with lyrics. A melody or idea of a story usually comes to mind, so I start writing down some songs that flow well with the storyline. I then continue through to the production process, usually in my apartment, and/or collaborating with great production engineers/musicians to help bring the song to life.
HYPEFRESH: Can you tell us about your new single, “Selfish”?
Karlie Cupani: This song came from an inner place of exhaustion with a constant attempt to mold to things that were not my true self. Often influenced by someone else’s viewpoints of me or a self-imposed negative image. I took the lyrics to the incredibly talented Producer(s)/Songwriter Olivier Bassil and Red Wins, and we spent months working on the sound to tell the story properly. Selfish is based on staying true to yourself and remembering that some of the best forms of being a better person are to start with yourself.
HYPEFRESH: What do you like most about being a music artist?
Karlie Cupani: The creative ability of expression, comfort, and togetherness that it brings to write about emotional scenarios. Music is one of the best forms of expression, and I am better at expressing my feelings through sound. Being able to pass on that powerful story of emotion through music to others to bring joy and resonance is an incredible feeling. It connects us with ourselves and connects us with others.
HYPEFRESH: What projects do you have coming up? Can you give us any info on them?
Karlie Cupani: I am working on an EP and more singles, creating a voyage of expression, self-love, and falling in love with a partner. The biggest thing for me is to take my time with the music and the outcome of it. I want to put care and emotion into it before others hear it. 2023 will be filled with new projects, and I couldn’t be more thankful for that.
HYPEFRESH: Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to enter the game of music?
Karlie Cupani: It can get overwhelming, and I still have much to learn, but it is essential to be relaxed about how you will make it happen and how to reach people. Great things do take time, and patience is necessary. Take your time creating incredible sound, and stay authentic to yourself. Listen and absorb information and suggestions from business leaders and people with good intentions who you can learn from. Try to meet people in the industry, and don’t be afraid to showcase your talent and take action for your career. Finally, if you have a sound that you know works for you, that you love, that truly resonates with you, stick to that, regardless of people’s opinions of how it might do. Try to implement a different sound sometimes, but stay within what you enjoy because it may be what others prefer. The best thing about art is that it’s your expression, and there will be people that resonate with it.
HYPEFRESH: How do you solve productivity/scheduling problems and reduce overwhelming situations?
Karlie Cupani: As an artist, this is a struggle that I continue to work through! When I started my project, there were a few tools I put together to help start the process and keep it seamless. I created a PowerPoint slide of my outlook on a music career. These included the purpose behind each song, the number of songs I wanted to be done within a specific time frame, and most importantly, the steps that were going to be needed to make each of these tracks come together into a final product. I also keep a daily schedule and try to follow it, even though it sometimes slips! We are human. It’s fine. Just try to do everyday tasks that will progress you toward your goals—one step at a time.
HYPEFRESH: Name Three things you can’t live without when recording in the studio.
Karlie Cupani: Tea, a sweatshirt, and a Neumann microphone.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a sequel the world did not see coming. With the sudden death of Chadwick Boseman, who brought the iconic Black superhero T’Challa to life, a sequel seemed unfit. As fans across the world mourned the Black Panther, an opportunity to create a new legacy came. In the same light, an opportunity to show unity within different cultures makes Black Panther more than just a super hero flick.
A New Legacy of Black Super-shero’s is born
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever takes superhero movies to historical heights like never before. Continuing the story of the magical place of Wakanda, we are reintroduced to Dora Milaje the warrior women of Wakanda, the various African tribes apart of Wakanda culture and the rich ancestral practices. A key element that makes this movie so historic is its focus on providing positive and accurate Black narratives.
In the new film, we take a journey with Shuri played by Letitia Wright as her “shero” origin story unfolds right before our eyes. Taking on the weight of the world while struggling with grief made for a captivating and encouraging moment. In addition to seeing her take her rightful place as the new Black Panther, we see the power behind her mother Queen Ramonda played by Angela Basset. Throughout the movie, she displays hero characteristics while making hard decisions and still in mourning.
Wakanda Forever pays tribute to the Mesoamerican Culture
An interesting element included throughout the film is the detailed history lesson on indigenous people. The villain in this sequel Namor played by actor Tenoch Huerta, is the face of not only evil but of revolution and retribution. As protector and king of Talokan a Mesoamerican-inspired underwater civilization, his wrath stems from a place of justice. Talokan is visually mesmerizing, the city pays tribute to the indigenous groups of the Maya, Aztecs and the Toltec heritage.
Director Ryan Coogler made a bold decision to highlight all aspects of Mesoamerica, which includes modern day Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Throughout the film, we see various Maya and Aztec fashions, such as bright feathered headdresses and colorful elaborate neckpieces. Showcasing the similarities that Black and Brown cultures face while respectfully depicting multiple cultures makes for a historical superhero movie.
Black Panther reminds the world that grief is never easy
Although fighting and conflict are expected in superhero movies, dealing with grief is a big theme we see throughout the film. As the world tries to move past the loss of T’Challa, Shuri and her mother deal with it differently. Queen Ramonda understands and accepts death, making peace with it early on. Shuri; however, encounters a dance with vengeance leading her down a road of personal reflection.
Making the decision to explore the effects that grief, anger and responsibility have if not properly addressed was a bold decision. We also see the outcome of grief from various characters throughout the film. Of course grief is never easy, it is a necessary feeling everyone has to experience.
This Film is for The Culture
Already breaking records with box office opening numbers showing $355 Million after its opening night, the sequel is taking over theaters. International markets are also pouring in, with overseas box office numbers in the millions. With a run time of 2 hours and 41 minutes, the film is packed with equal amounts of action and history.
Paired with captivating performances, beautiful scenery and compelling details, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever takes super hero movies to historical heights. As for a possible third installment, fans will have to stick around for the post credits for a surprise ending.

Late Sunday, the University of Virginia took a horrific loss in losing three of its students in a campus shooting, reported Mark Schlabach for ESPN. Sadly, three of their students were athletes, specifically, football players for the Cavaliers. However, the story takes an interesting turn when many find out that the suspect killer in custody at the moment is a former football player of the University. The suspect murderer officially killed three students and wounded another two.
After a long manhunt to track him down, he’s been apprehended, according to Charlottesville, Virginia, police confirmed Monday. The three football players tragically murdered were junior WR Lavel Davis Jr., junior WR Devin Chandler, and junior DE D’Sean Perry. The suspected murderer is Christopher Darnell Jr. and he’s being charged with three counts of second-degree murder. This includes three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony.
University of Virginia President Jim Ryan expressed his condolences and sorrow for the victims and their loved ones following the tragic shooting incident. Ryan described it as a sad and shocking day for the university community.
University Virginia Football Thoughts and Prayers
Naturally, the HC for the Virginia football Cavaliers Tony Elliot released a statement on behalf of the tragic loss of three of his current players. In general, this is a troubling time for athletes and even regular students that attend the University.
Essentially, their safety is compromised and many are looking for security within their individual safety. In Elliot’s statement, he mentions deep heartache. He also mentions after receiving the troubling news how he still finds hope within the Virginia community. He believes they can still rally and come together.
“I cannot express the immense sorrow and pain our team is feeling today after the tragic events last night that led to the loss of Lavel, D’Sean, and Devin,” Elliot stated. “We also extend our thoughts to those who were injured. These young men had exceptional dreams and promising futures ahead of them. Our hearts ache for their families, classmates, and friends. They were taken from us too soon.
We feel grateful to have had them in our lives. They touched us, motivated us, and worked diligently as representatives of our program, university, and community. May they rest in peace,” Elliot concluded.
