Pennsylvania police launched the manhunt for the person who presented himself as “The Box Demon” following an unusual encounter at a residence in North York. What transpired during the early hours of March 11, 2025, left the community perplexed and sparked online buzz.
The incident took place at approximately 4:00 AM at the home of Tammy McAnnaney on East 10th Avenue in North York, York County. A person wearing a handmade paper-plate mask approached McAnnaney’s front door, placed an empty box on the porch, and rang the doorbell. Leaning into the homeowner’s Ring camera, the figure tilted their head and declared,
“I am the Box Demon. I am the Box Demon … This box is a gift for you.”
The eerie scene, accompanied by faint, tinkly music, was fully captured by the Ring camera footage, leaving an indelible mark on those who viewed it.
The Northern York County Regional Police Department was quick to make the footage available to the public to aid in identifying the mysterious individual. Case 2025-011158 was designated to the incident, and the police requested tips, asking people with information to contact them at 717.467.TELL (8355) or email them at [email protected]. The strange nature of the act stirred interest and concern among the residents.
Just two days later, on March 13, 2025, authorities announced that they had successfully identified the person behind the “Box Demon” persona. After speaking with the individual, police determined there were no public safety concerns, though they chose not to disclose the person’s identity. This resolution brought relief to a community that had been on edge since the footage surfaced.
Tammy McAnnaney, the homeowner at the center of the ordeal, initially expressed alarm over the encounter. Speaking to WGAL, she said,
“It could have been a bad situation. I think it’s dangerous.”
However, once informed of the identification, McAnnaney opted for privacy and declined further comment, signaling her wish to move past the unsettling event.
The incident didn’t just stay local. The Ring camera video quickly spread across social media, turning “The Box Demon” into a viral sensation. Reactions ranged from fear and unease to amusement, with some labeling it a peculiar prank. While the initial mystery gripped the public’s imagination, the police’s quick work in identifying the individual and confirming no ongoing threat helped ease tensions in North York.
Though the motive behind the “Box Demon’s” actions remains a mystery, this strange episode underscores the role of home surveillance in modern security and how social media can amplify even the oddest local stories.
