Apple’s dominance in the global smartphone market is being underscored by a new viral statistic that puts the company’s scale into sharp focus.
A post shared on X on Dec. 16 claimed that Apple is selling eight iPhones every second, a figure that quickly caught attention online for its sheer magnitude. The post, which featured a graphic emphasizing the speed of Apple’s sales, was followed by a thread breaking down how the number was calculated, noting that global iPhone demand now adds up to hundreds of thousands of devices sold each day.
While one reply dismissed the claim as exaggerated, industry data suggests the number is largely accurate. According to projections from International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple is expected to ship approximately 247.4 million iPhones in 2025, a record year for the company. When spread across the 31.5 million seconds in a non-leap year, that total works out to roughly 7.85 iPhones sold per second on average.
The math translates to about 470 iPhones per minute, more than 28,000 per hour, and roughly 678,000 per day, assuming an even distribution throughout the year. In practice, sales tend to spike around major product launches and the holiday season, but analysts say the annual average supports the viral claim.
Other research firms report similar findings. Counterpoint Research estimates Apple’s 2025 shipments to be slightly lower, at around 243 million units, but still sufficient to support a pace of more than seven iPhones sold per second. The firm also projects Apple will surpass Samsung as the world’s top smartphone shipper by volume in 2025, marking the first time Apple has held that position in 14 years.
The surge is being driven by strong global demand for the iPhone 17 lineup, a rebound in China after earlier slowdowns, and a broad upgrade cycle as users replace devices purchased during the pandemic years. IDC data show that Apple captured more than 20% of the market share in China during parts of late 2025, while maintaining its strength in the U.S. and emerging markets.
Taken together, the numbers highlight not only Apple’s commercial success but also how deeply the iPhone has become embedded in everyday life. With iPhone revenue expected to exceed $260 billion in 2025, the company’s flagship product remains a central force in consumer tech—and, increasingly, a viral talking point across culture and social media.
