Your bathroom might soon get a high-tech upgrade — it’s not just about heated seats or automatic flushing.
Kohler, best known for its luxury fixtures and sleek bathroom designs, is entering the digital health world with Dekoda. This new $600 toilet-mounted camera system analyzes what you leave behind to offer insights into your gut health, hydration levels, and potential health concerns.
The device — available for pre-order now and set to start shipping on October 21, 2025 — marks the first product from Kohler’s new Kohler Health division.
How It Works
Dekoda attaches to most toilet rims with a simple clamp, placing its camera and sensors directly above the bowl (don’t worry, it only looks down).
Using spectroscopy and machine learning, the system studies how light interacts with waste to analyze a range of health indicators — from stool consistency and shape (yes, there’s a chart for that) to hydration levels and even potential signs of blood in urine or stool.
A removable magnetic battery keeps it powered for about a week per charge via USB-C. Kohler says most tech sits outside the bowl for easy cleaning and maintenance.
Privacy Comes First
Kohler knows what you’re thinking.
The company assures users that Dekoda “sees down into your toilet and nowhere else.” All data is protected with end-to-end encryption, and users can choose to authenticate via an optional Bluetooth fingerprint scanner — meaning your guests’ flushes won’t end up in your health report.
Multiple users can also track their metrics separately through the Kohler Health app, which is available for iOS now (Android support coming soon).
What It Costs
The Dekoda device costs $599, but to unlock personalized insights and trend tracking, users need a Kohler Health membership:
- Individual plan: $6.99/month or $70/year
- Family plan (up to 5 users): $12.99/month or $130/year
The app provides daily health scores, hydration summaries, and real-time alerts when concerning patterns appear.
Smart Toilets Are Having a Moment
Kohler isn’t the only one betting on “smart waste.”
Austin-based Throne Science sells its Throne One system for $399, while France’s Withings launched U-Scan in 2023, focusing solely on urine analysis at around $527.
According to market data, the global smart toilet market — worth $8.2 billion in 2023 — is expected to grow by 6.3% annually through 2032, thanks to rising interest in wellness tech and at-home health tracking.
Health Benefits — and Privacy Questions
Experts say the idea isn’t as strange as it sounds. A 2023 study found that “smart toilets” could help detect early signs of disease with minimal user effort, while Stanford University researchers have been developing similar “precision health toilets” since 2020.
Still, privacy advocates warn about potential risks, from data leaks to third-party sharing. Kohler says Dekoda’s system uses secure storage and anonymized processing, but as with all smart health tech, users will have to decide how much trust to put in the cloud.
The Bottom Line
With its sleek design, trusted brand name, and focus on health tracking, Kohler’s Dekoda could be the next step in turning your bathroom into a wellness hub.
But whether people are ready for a camera in their toilet remains to be seen.
After all, if smartwatches can track your heartbeat, maybe smart toilets can track everything else.
