Trionda World Cup Ball AI Chip: How FIFA’s Smart Ball Will Change Refereeing

The 2026 FIFA World Cup just got a high-tech upgrade. FIFA has officially revealed the Trionda, the tournament’s brand-new match ball — unlike anything fans have seen before.

Created by Adidas, the Trionda isn’t just a ball — it’s a piece of cutting-edge technology. Inside is an AI-powered motion sensor chip that tracks every touch and sends real-time data to referees. The result? Faster, more accurate decisions on everything from offside calls to tricky handball situations.

According to FIFA, the chip — which collects data 500 times every second — will cut down the average time it takes for video assistant referees (VAR) to make decisions, from more than a minute to just about 25 seconds. That means less waiting for fans and more time for the game to flow.

But the Trionda isn’t just about tech. Its design celebrates the three host countries — Canada, Mexico, and the United States — in bold, symbolic detail. Red panels are decorated with Canadian maple leaves, blue sections feature American stars, green areas highlight Mexico’s eagle emblem, and gold accents nod to the World Cup trophy.

The name also carries meaning: “Tri” represents the three hosts, while “Onda,” the Spanish word for “wave,” symbolizes unity across borders.

In addition to its cultural flair, the ball has been engineered for performance. With just four panels — the fewest in World Cup history — it offers smoother flight, better grip in wet conditions, and improved aerodynamics. FIFA says it’s been tested across the diverse climates of the 16 host cities to ensure consistent performance no matter where it’s played.

The Trionda will debut when the expanded 48-team tournament kicks off on June 11, 2026, running through July 19. Fans won’t have to wait until then to get their hands on one. Starting October 3, 2025, the ball is available at $170 USD (€150–160) on Adidas.com, Soccer.com, and select stores worldwide.

Retired football legends Jürgen Klinsmann, Cafu, Alessandro Del Piero, Zinedine Zidane, and Xavi Hernández made a special appearance in New York for the official unveiling of the new World Cup match ball.

Building on technology first introduced in Russia in 2018 with VAR and in Qatar in 2022 with connected ball data, the Trionda is the latest step in FIFA’s push to keep the world’s biggest sporting event modern, fair, and exciting.
