Linwei Ding, known in professional circles as Leon Ding, is a former Google software engineer specializing in data center software. Born in 1986, Ding is a Chinese national with a rich academic background. He holds a Master’s degree in Arts from Nanjing University, where he delved into Media and Cultural Study, Art Theory, Musicology, and Sound Study.
Supercomputing data centers are the powerhouses of the digital world. They house advanced computer systems capable of processing vast data at incredible speeds. These centers are crucial for AI development, offering the needed computational power to train complex models. They also analyze data for AI operations and large datasets and execute intricate algorithms.
In June 2022, Ding was offered a lucrative Chief Technology Officer (CTO) role at Beijing Rongshu Lianzhi Technology Co (Rongshu), a Chinese tech company. This offer came with a monthly salary of $14,800, and Ding allegedly accepted it without Google’s knowledge. In May 2023, while at Google, Ding founded Shanghai Zhisuan Technology Co. He became its CEO.

Central to the accusations is that Ding never disclosed his affiliations with Rongshu or Zhisuan to his then-employer, Google. This lack of disclosure is a significant element of the case against him. Following his resignation from Google in December 2023, an investigation into Ding’s network activity unearthed unauthorized uploads of confidential files to his account.
Ding is accused of taking 500 secret Google documents. The files are about AI and supercomputing centers. This suggests stealing trade secrets to help Chinese AI firms.
Ding might get up to 10 years in jail if he is guilty. The fines could reach $250,000 per count.
