Social media can be full of unusual talents, but one woman’s rare skill has the internet doing a double-take. In a video making the rounds on X (formerly Twitter), she manages to touch her eyes with her tongue — a feat that looks straight out of a circus act.
As strange as it seems, doctors say there could be a scientific explanation. Studies have shown that some people are born with hypermobility — extra-flexible joints and tissues — that let them bend or stretch their bodies in unusual ways. Research published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics found that 10 to 20 percent of people have this flexibility.
The phenomenon even has roots in history. In the 1800s, circus performers known as “elastic men” wowed audiences with similar abilities. Medical reports from the time noted that these weren’t learned tricks but natural quirks of the human body.
And while the viral video hasn’t been medically confirmed, new research hints at why this kind of flexibility may be more than just a stunt. A 2020 study in Neuroscience Letters suggested that unusual flexibility can also sharpen a person’s spatial awareness — meaning being able to touch your eye with your tongue could come with hidden perks.
For now, the internet is fascinated. What looks like a wild party trick may be a rare glimpse into the incredible (and sometimes unbelievable) things the human body can do.
