Troy Ave and Chef Geoff Cole Staged a Fake Shootout for Instagram Fame

A dramatic video that went viral earlier this week depicting rapper Troy Ave seemingly defending celebrity chef Geoff Cole from an armed assailant has now been confirmed as a staged event, orchestrated for social media engagement.

On July 15, 2025, Cole uploaded the video to Instagram, showing the two men exiting a Bentley outside Cole’s San Diego-area home. Moments later, a masked individual appeared to approach them aggressively, prompting Troy Ave to pull a handgun and fire at the supposed attacker while music played from the car. The video drew rapid praise across social media, igniting commentary hailing Ave’s apparent heroism.

Initial coverage by outlets including TMZ, The Root, and Complex framed the incident as a legitimate attempted robbery. Chef Cole himself fueled the narrative, posting, “s/o 2 my BROTHER Ave for Holding it Down in a situation where most woulda RAN or FOLDED.”

However, that narrative unraveled just 24 hours later. On July 16, TMZ and other sources published updates citing insiders close to Troy Ave and Chef Cole who confirmed the scene was entirely fabricated. San Diego County law enforcement added weight to the revelations, reporting no incidents matching the supposed shootout. No shots were fired, and no police reports were filed.

The video’s cinematic style and accompanying soundtrack led some viewers to speculate it may have been part of a music promotion campaign. While that theory remains unconfirmed, the stunt underscores the growing trend of public figures pushing boundaries for viral recognition.

Reaction to the deception has been mixed. Early praise on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) quickly shifted to criticism once the truth emerged.

Despite public scrutiny, neither Troy Ave nor Chef Geoff Cole has commented on the staged shootout. Attempts by media outlets including Halla Back to reach Cole were unsuccessful. As of this report, no legal consequences have been mentioned.

While no harm was reported, the ethical implications of staging a gunfight — especially amid ongoing national conversations about gun violence — have drawn criticism from both fans and media analysts.
