Who is Princess Sarah Culberson?

Sarah Culberson, is a woman who was adopted by a white family in West Virginia. Culberson’s curiosity about her family history led to her discovery of her connection to African royalty. NBC News reported the details of Culberson’s story when she returned home to Sierra Leone.

How Deep are Culberson’s Roots?

Sarah’s heritage traces back to the Mende tribe in Bumpe, Sierra Leone. She holds the title of mahaloi, as the child of a paramount chief, making her the princess of the Bumpe village. In 2006, she participated in a special ceremony, warmly welcomed by her father and the community.

“I thought princesses were like the ones in movies,” Culberson told NBC News. “But being a princess means being responsible and continuing the legacy of my great-grandfather and grandfather to help the country grow.”

Sarah’s Adoptive Father Speaks

James Culberson, Sarah’s adoptive father, a neurobiology professor at West Virginia University commented on his adopted daughter’s nature.

To everyone, Sarah has always been a people person. Culberson told the NBC News:

“Sarah was a sociable and friendly one-year-old when we adopted her. She still has that same outgoing personality, genuinely loving and enjoying almost everyone she meets,” he said. ” “Almost from her first visit to Sierra Leone to meet her father, she saw her ‘princess’ role as one involving trying to find some way to help. She certainly recognized her close connection to a family and chiefdom and country; her work to improve life there has demonstrated tremendous personal growth in many areas.”

Culberson’s Civic Engagement

Culberson partnered with her biological brother Hindo Kposowa. They founded the Kposowa Foundation (now called Sierra Leone Rising) in 2006 to rebuild Bumpe High School and advocate for education in the country.

Furthermore, Sierra Leone rising provided masks to thousands of people during the pandemic crisis. The foundation also offered reusable pads to women and girls.

“It was such a life-altering experience,” Culberson said of her initial visit. “It was shocking, amazing, overwhelming, exciting. It was beautiful, glorious and uplifting!”

Eyes will be on the princess as she makes a difference in her home country.
