Jets’ defensive lineman, Quinnen Williams, was arrested at the Delta Air Lines check-in at LaGuardia Airport Thursday night. Williams, 22, was the third overall pick for the 2019 NFL draft. Although he had a quiet rookie season, he’s now making headlines on reports of gun charges.
Williams, who was a standout player at the University of Alabama, has been hit with a weapons possession charge. Authorities entered the airport around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday night and put him in ‘cuffs shortly thereafter.
However, police have said that the Glock 19 they retrieved from Williams was in fact unloaded. It’s unclear what exactly went down, but we speculate that this was an innocent mistake.
The handgun possessed by Williams is currently registered in the state of Alabama. But, not in the state of New York, where of course he spends most of his time. New York maintains very strict gun laws and Williams could possibly face jail time.
Furthermore, Williams was also found to be carrying ammunition. Consequentially, according to New York law, that could interpret the gun as being loaded.
If Williams did self-report whatever he had on him, that could certainly help his case. Otherwise, New York courts can be unforgiving in these types of situations.
Williams’ lawyer, Alex Spiro, said in a statement, Mr. Williams respects and abides by the law. There was reportedly a technical issue concerning the lawful storage of his firearm, and we anticipate a prompt resolution to the matter.
A Jets spokesperson stated that they are aware of the situation involving Quinnen Williams and will refrain from further comments as it is a pending legal matter.
Williams’ court date is set for March 25.
With a $32.5 million contract signed to the Jets, let’s wish him the best of luck in this situation.
