Veteran YouTuber Philip DeFranco has announced plans to donate the full $1 million prize he won in MrBeast’s star-studded “50 YouTube Legends Fight For $1,000,000” competition to members of his community facing financial hardships.
DeFranco, known for his long-running news and commentary channel under the phillydefranco and sxephil monikers, emerged victorious in the challenge video, which MrBeast released around June 13-14, 2026. The high-profile event, which quickly racked up tens of millions of views, reunited dozens of OG YouTubers to mark MrBeast’s milestone of reaching 500 million subscribers on the platform.
According to DeFranco, his decision to participate was driven less by competition and more by curiosity. The longtime creator said he primarily joined to get an inside look at MrBeast’s large-scale production setup, having reported on the creator’s ventures in the past. Expecting an early exit, he planned to use the experience as research for future content.
Instead, DeFranco outlasted fellow veteran YouTubers — including names like Jesse Wellens, iJustine and Matthew Santoro — through a gauntlet of challenges inspired by iconic moments from YouTube’s history. The contests mixed physical endurance tests, strategy games, team collaborations and nostalgic tasks referencing everything from early viral trends to Minecraft-style builds.
In the video’s emotional finale, MrBeast declared DeFranco the winner. Shortly after, the YouTuber revealed he would not be keeping any of the prize money for himself. In announcements shared across Instagram, TikTok and his own platforms starting around June 16, DeFranco detailed plans to distribute the funds — approximately $25,000 each — to roughly 40 subscribers dealing with issues such as medical bills and other economic difficulties.
Calling it a way of “paying it forward,” DeFranco reflected on the support and lucky breaks that helped sustain his two-decade-plus career on YouTube, which dates back to the platform’s early days. He added a humorous spin, joking about “accidentally” winning and pulling money from “MrBeast’s wallet,” while referring to his audience affectionately as the “beautiful bastards” in Franco Nation.
The creator has noted that the process is more complex than anticipated due to legal and tax considerations, and he is currently consulting with lawyers. Full details on the application process, eligibility and timeline are expected soon, though no entry window has opened yet.
DeFranco has also teased a more comprehensive breakdown video or livestream covering his full experience, including behind-the-scenes insights and unaired moments. Additional reports from participants have surfaced regarding alleged attempts to influence voting in the later stages of the competition.
Further updates on the giveaway and DeFranco’s recap are anticipated in the coming days.
