Philly Schools Shut Down Friday for Eagles Super Bowl Parade

The streets of Philadelphia were awash in green and white today, Friday, February 14, 2025, as the city held a massive parade to commemorate the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX championship victory.

The parade started at 11 a.m. at the corner of Pattison Avenue and Broad Street. The parade moved north along Broad Street, passing by such famous landmarks as City Hall, until it concluded on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. There, players and coaches addressed the rowdy crowd, basking in the adoration of their fans.

So that families could be a part of the historic celebration, Philadelphia Superintendent Tony Watlington announced that city schools would be closed. Several suburban Pennsylvania and New Jersey school districts also took the hint, shutting their schools for the day.

“This is a historic victory for our city,” Superintendent Watlington emphasized. “We want people to celebrate safely and responsibly.”

There was an electric sense of anticipation in the city. “It’s a historic day for Philadelphia,” resident Maria Gonzalez was quoted as saying. “My family and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts appreciated the huge support. “The support from our fans has been incredible,” he said. “This parade is as much for them as it is for us.” While the city rejoiced, the parade also served as a backdrop for the ongoing plight of Philadelphia’s public schools. Recent statistics indicate the district’s average math proficiency score stands at 16%, far lower than the Pennsylvania state average of 36%. Reading proficiency stands at 35%, also below the state average of 55%. Superintendent Watlington acknowledged the difficulties, stating, “While today is a day of celebration, we remain committed to advancing the academic success of our students.” He indicated measures are being taken to correct these issues and improve student learning outcomes.

The Eagles’ victory in Super Bowl LIX and the subsequent parade are evidence of the deep connection between the team and the city. These types of events not only foster civic pride but also illustrate the unifying power of sports in America.
