A four-month-old pet goose named Goosey woke his owners in the middle of the night by repeatedly honking outside a burning barn on their Fort Bend County property, giving the family time to extinguish the flames and save the animals inside.
The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning, August 4, at the Gerber family’s homestead in Richmond, Texas. Bert Gerber had fallen asleep on the couch after watching television when he heard an unusual series of honks outside. The sound was one the family had never heard from the bird before.
Home security footage shared by Chelsea Gerber shows flames already burning inside the barn that housed the family’s chickens, turkeys and roosters. Roughly 40 seconds into the clip, Goosey emerges from the structure and begins pacing back and forth while squawking insistently, the noise functioning like an alarm.
“I just casually came outside, and I saw a fire billowing out of there,”
Bert Gerber told local reporters.
“I grabbed a water hose and ran over there.”
He put out the fire quickly. All the animals inside escaped unharmed, and the damage remained minimal. Bert later said that if he had slept even a couple more minutes, the blaze likely would have grown out of control.
“If I hadn’t been woken up, I think in a couple more minutes, it would have been out of control,”
he said.
Chelsea Gerber, who shared the security video through Storyful, described the family’s reaction after reviewing the footage as pure disbelief mixed with gratitude.
“Our goose, Goosey, alerted us by honking, waking us up,”
she said.
“We were fortunate to get all the flames out, and everyone is safe.”
Goosey had joined the household only four months earlier. On Mother’s Day, May 10, Chelsea and her daughter Elaine visited a poultry expo. Chelsea has long been terrified of geese, but the event featured a “Hug a Goose” tent that Elaine could not resist. The girl fell for the small, fluffy bird, and the family brought him home.
“When we got him, he was so small and he was just so fluffy,”
Elaine later recalled.
“When I got to pet his head, he would just rest his head on my arm and it just made me tear up.”
Chelsea has said the decision felt fated in hindsight. “Four months later, he saved our homestead,” she noted. The family continues to keep chickens, turkeys and roosters on the property, and Goosey remains part of the flock. Reports indicate the cause of the fire has not been determined.
The video has circulated widely since Chelsea posted it, with outlets including KHOU, People and USA Today carrying the story. Chelsea has continued posting updates of Goosey and the rest of the animals on her TikTok account, where the original security footage first appeared.
The Gerbers have expressed pride in the young goose and relief that the outcome was limited to a scare rather than a loss. In one update, Chelsea observed that people often underestimate how observant birds can be, adding that Goosey proved attention to animals can matter more than expected.
