2024 fatal shooting of Philadelphia’s rapper YBC Dul, a young man by the name of Abdul Vicks, sent complete shockwaves not only in but also outside Philly’s hip-hop community, after a deadly mass shooting on Arch Street and in an elevator with other teens downtown. The big question being on everyone’s tongues: could these murders have been prevented? Following an ongoing active investigation, official authorities denied reported involvement of 14-year suspect and distribution of a mug shot. A person of interest cited is a sixteen-year-old prime suspect, who is Aiden Waters. His charges are heinous: End.
Vicks, 25, was fatally shot in a drive-by at about 3:34 p.m. in the 5600 block of North 6th Street in North Philadelphia, according to Philadelphia police. Vicks was in his white Hyundai SUV when gunmen opened fire on him from their white Kia Sportage. Some surveillance footage from the incident also helped police connect the dots as investigators say he was the result of an ongoing gang war between groups.
YBC Dul was an up-and-coming figure in Philadelphia’s underground rap scene, better known as “Mr. Disrespectful.” He sang about street life and the rivalries between different gangs, even going so far as to claim he urinated on a rival’s grave. His affiliations and persona made him an easy target in the increasingly violent landscape.
Aiden Waters, 16, is facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, arson, conspiracy, and various firearm offenses. Authorities say he may have been involved in multiple shootings across the same week, part of a concerning increase in gang violence among young people in Philadelphia.
Along with Waters, 18-year-old Rashawn Williams was arrested on October 22, 2024, and charged with murder and aggravated assault. He is currently held on a $2 million bond. Latoya Donaldson, 39, was also charged in December 2024 for allegedly supplying the rifle used in the attack, bringing the total number of arrests to three.
The investigation into the network of individuals linked to the murder is ongoing by law enforcement.
The mugshots were not released due to minors being convicted, and the serious nature of the crimes. The manner in which juvenile suspects have been treated by the legal system is already a consideration, as many have debated whether or not Waters should be charged as an adult. There have been a string of false information reports about a 14-year-old suspect, which led to a call by YBC Dul’s father for media houses to fact-check information before releasing it to the public. Philadelphia has for a long period of time grappled with gang-related violence, including groups like the Young Bag Chasers, which YBC Dul is said to be affiliated with. The turf war has resulted in a very worrying trend among youths in the city, something that has led to calls for increased intervention programs and tighter gun controls.
Community leaders and top police brass alike have reiterated a call for such programs that match at-risk youth with mentors along with other initiatives as a prevention against the growth of gang culture. Up until his death, YBC Dul was believed to have been an up-and-coming rising star in the hip-hop community-a genre of music with roots planted deep within Philadelphia. It would now fall to the hip-hop community and the residents to face the horrific results of street violence. His father has taken to social media to squash rumors and call for justice while others blame the young man’s controversial lifestyle as perhaps leading to his tragic demise. The case puts into the spotlight the complicated issues of youth violence, gang activity, and the desperate need for solutions facing Philadelphia and other cities with similar problems.
