Harlem rapper Max B is officially a free man.
The 47-year-old artist, whose real name is Charly Wingate, was released from Northern State Prison in New Jersey on November 9, 2025, after serving more than 16 years behind bars. His release marks the end of one of hip-hop’s longest and most talked-about incarceration stories — and the beginning of a new chapter for the influential rapper.
Max B’s release turned into a double celebration when it happened to coincide with the birthday of his longtime friend and collaborator French Montana.
In a heartwarming moment captured on social media, the two reunited outside the prison gates, sharing an emotional hug as fans cheered. Dressed in a white Givenchy shirt and jeans, Max B smiled as he embraced French, who later shared the video on Instagram with the caption:
“CANT MAKE THIS UP! MY BROTHER REALLY CAME HOME ON MY B DAY! HAMDULILLAH WALKED IT DOWN! NO MORE FREE YOU.”
The post immediately went viral, drawing thousands of comments from fans and fellow artists celebrating Max B’s homecoming.
Max B’s release follows a long and complicated legal battle that began in 2009, when he was sentenced to 75 years in prison for his alleged involvement in a botched armed robbery in New Jersey that left one person dead.
Years later, his legal team successfully appealed the conviction, arguing a conflict of interest with his original attorney. In 2016, he struck a plea deal for aggravated manslaughter, reducing his sentence to 20 years and paving the way for his eventual release.
Earlier this year, during a call-in appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, Max B confidently predicted his freedom, saying, “We got a date! I’ve got November 9, 2025, baby!”
Despite spending much of his career behind bars, Max B’s influence on modern rap never disappeared. Known for his signature “wavy” sound and melodic delivery, he’s often credited with shaping a new generation of artists, including A$AP Mob, Drake, Kanye West, The Weeknd, and French Montana.
His Coke Wave mixtape series with French Montana in the late 2000s remains a cult classic, helping define the sound of melodic rap long before it dominated the mainstream.
Now that he’s home, Max B is eager to get back to work. In a recent interview, he said,
“I’m working. I can’t wait to get re-acclimated. You already know I’m a musical genius myself, so people gotta get re-acclimated with my shit. It’s a challenge. I love a good challenge. I’m the trendsetter.”
According to sources close to the rapper, new music and collaborations are already in progress, and a tour could follow in 2026. Fans are also hopeful for another team-up between Max B and French Montana — a reunion years in the making.
After more than a decade of fans chanting “Free Max B,” the man who brought the wave to hip-hop is finally home.
