Matt Ox Arrested in Los Angeles on Drug Possession Charges During Traffic Stop

Philadelphia-born rapper Matt Ox, who rose to prominence as a child prodigy in the hip-hop scene, was arrested in Burbank, California, on April 5, 2025, following a traffic stop that led to the discovery of controlled substances.

According to police reports, the 20-year-old artist, born Matthew Grau, was one of three occupants in a black Lexus stopped by Burbank Police around 4:30 a.m. for vehicle code violations near Glenoaks Boulevard and Walnut Avenue. Matt Ox was seated in the backseat when officers searched the vehicle, reportedly uncovering several cups containing a promethazine-codeine mixture—commonly known as “lean”—alongside oxycodone and alprazolam (Xanax).

All three individuals were arrested on misdemeanor narcotics charges. The substances discovered are classified as controlled medications that require valid prescriptions. Oxycodone is a Schedule II opioid known for its high potential for addiction, while alprazolam and promethazine-codeine are Schedule IV substances, often misused recreationally, particularly in the hip-hop community.

Matt Ox now faces two counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. Following his booking at the Burbank Police Department jail, he was released with a citation and is scheduled to appear in court on April 30, 2025. If convicted, penalties may include fines, probation, mandatory drug education, or jail time, depending on prior offenses and substance quantities.

Shortly after his release, Matt Ox posted his mugshot to Instagram with a provocative caption:

“FK THE SYSTEM! FREE THE KIDS! NEW MUSIC SOON! LOCKED ME UP FOR NUN IM BACK THO!”**

Matt Ox first gained attention in 2017 with his viral hit “Overwhelming” at 12, becoming a standout figure in the SoundCloud rap era. He later signed with Motown Records and released his debut album OX in 2018, featuring collaborations with Chief Keef, Valee, and the late XXXTentacion.

Despite his early fame, Matt Ox has continued releasing music. His most recent album, Teenrage, was released in 2023, and in March 2025, he released the single “Dayum” with Slimesito.

This arrest marks a critical juncture in the young artist’s career. The alleged drug possession raises concerns about potential substance misuse that could affect both his well-being and his future in music.
